  • Insightful video, thank you! On a sidenote, just a random thought, it's interesting to see how musicians on videos like this, in general, exudes a much greater aura of respect when he/she has a real tape-machine in the background ????Everytime I see that I'm hit with a feeling that "wow he knows what he's talking about".

  • Okay I'm going to go rip the guitar now and don't worry I recorded all in OBS and when the internet finally gets here in the next couple of months I'm going to show you

  • For some reason my ego wants you guys that are on YouTube and making money and doing things to actually see what it is that I can do and I totally guarantee that it would give you a new outlook on an old Outlook

  • Did you get a chance to play in the days where you put a bunch of pedals through your amp and you might get to the board and then the board had a rack of effects and that included stereo chorus And Delay that they ripped back through the PA

  • Some Grit? Damn that sounds f**** pretty gritty to me yeah I'm pretty sure that this video isn't one of your favorites but you know it's only because of ego man this is a great video and you was totally kicking ass on this gear way back then and I'm just giving you a hard time

  • Tweed Deluxe okay I'll have to show you my Tweed Deluxe with spark boost wah dynacomp Sparkle Drive with multi chorus delay and Reverb

  • Oh yeah and I specialize in getting whatever sound you might ask for from a champ to a twin to a Plexi to a rectifier to a high watt to a Soldano to whatever

  • You totally got me on any new gear though this video is 4 years old and you know how to mess with new gear I mean man my modeler is almost 30 years old and my wah pedal is almost 40 years old and my drive pedal is almost 20 years old and I'm telling you that I can put it to tape like I haven't heard anyone on YouTube yet

  • I really dig the tones in the mix but I just ain't into matching up to Old tones I got such a modern tone that you guys ain't heard yet

  • I really dig your real Aunt tones you're pretty much a real amp kind of guy that's moved over into modelers I'm a guy that had a GSP 2.1 Legend when it first come out the first year and then rocking them through big Peavey CS 800s and Marshall cabinets

  • My best use for a compressor is when you're playing a great big Spanky amp at very loud volumes it helps keep it under control

    Reply
  • You got an ear for getting a classic tone I can't wait for you to hear my tone with an acoustic electric and t60

    Reply
  • Damn bro you really nailed it on that one man the compressor does exactly that it makes your stuff sound really good and even for stuff that needs to be good and even but it's not Dynamic and I don't use it except for bawling ass lead guitar

  • You're on the right track for any amp model that I pick I can kind of make it sound like other amp model by setting the frequency of the mid that I'm cutting or boosting

  • I'm going to critique this video because I've been doing this probably 20 years longer than you but with the exact same model or the whole time

  • When you run your Kemper or Fractal you plug it in the back of an amp head but what if you are just using the effects of the unit, can you plug it into the guitar input of a Blues Jr. for example?

  • It's 2024, and I come back regularly just for the intro. It's just perfect and inspires me on my quest for my personal guitar tone.

  • This is actually a really good set of tips. I have been considering putting a rack compressor after my modeller for a while, because it's not a full featured modeller with built in effects. I'm using effects pedals. I'm going to see how it goes.

  • That's so funny, I did like 3 of these tricks haphazardly on the tone studio app for a boss katana.

Global eq set post amp, and roll off the bass n treble. Added a hair of midrange around 800hz with a very wide q as well.

Set another parametric eq going in with agressive, narrow cuts primarily in the low and low mids.

Then changed the effects chain to have the "fx" block come after the amp. Used a limiter instead of a compressor since it had more tweakability vs the compressors. Set the ratio super low, like 2:1 or lower. Slow attack, 30ms+, fast release, 30-40ms, and let the threshold be adjustable from the fx knob on the amp.

This drastically transformed the katana for me. I'd take it over many budget tube amps now. Pretty wild how much simple eq and compression can do to your sound.

  • I can bet you are influenced by band Sentenced … at least a bit. I can feel Miika in your intro.

  • Hi Rhett, I know this is a pretty old video now, but is the preset pack from this video still available?

  • You are a humble guy bro. It may be the best quality any of us could wish for. Compressor? A guy gave me a Boss compressor about 20 years ago and said he didn't like pedals that didn't do anything. I had a nice guitar and rig and noticed a little difference but the more I played, the more I noticed it. I sold it and got a Keeley Compressor and it has been on 85% of the time. It's probably the sustain I like the most.

  • I really struggled with getting my tone on the Helix, and when I applied some of your tips regarding the high pass, EQ and some compression after the amp block, my tone shaped up to be what I wanted it to sound like! Thank you so much!

  • I like to use the high cut low-cut in my helix on the amplifier, and or the speaker cabinet. Another thing I like to do is to put more distance between the mic and the speaker to me. It sounds more like it’s in a room especially when I’m playing loud over my head rush, powered speakers.

  • how to make your tube amp more like the real thing( a vintage tone monster):
1.swap the crappy chinese speaker to alnico (150$-300$)
2.swap the first crappy russian preamp tube to vintage used rca/ge/mullard (under 100$)
3.that's it! enjoy! no updates no learning curve no programming degree needed

  • Rhett where can i get this preset package ? Page doesnt exist it says when i cluck the link

  • very helpful stuff here…thanx for explaining the "why" of using low and high pass adjustments to your amp/cab sims…the only video i've seen that actually details what you're trying to emulate with a real amp…

  • I would skip the compressor tip because naturally, as a digital amp, something like a kemper or helix is going to have that Sonic consistency already.

    Reply
  • That was really useful!
On another note, can anyone explain to me why any preset downloaded from customtone with an IR in it sounds so awful?? I can’t figure out why anyone would use it because I haven’t heard a good IR yet
