Custom Build: Part 11 – Fender Pure Vintage 64 v CS Texas Specials – Did I make The Right Choice?
A Custom Build Telecaster Style guitar to Equal Fender’s Custom Shop at an Affordable Price? (PART 11) – My Custom built T-Style guitar has turned out very well but the Texas Special Pick-ups are just not doing it for me… Enter the Fender Pure Vintage 64s.
Over the weeks I’ve been building my own Custom Shop Telecaster Style Guitar – something that I hope will equal the Fender Custom Shop guitars I have in the studio – but, at a much lower cost and produced using fairly basic tools.
In Part 1 – The foundation of any guitar project – The Body and Neck and the reasons why I made the choices I did. ( https://youtu.be/DK1PVW35pTU )
In Part 2 – Preparation, sanding sealing, priming and first coats of amber lacquer for neck & headstock. Danish Oil treatment for the rosewood fretboard. ( https://youtu.be/eYZ1qQFRnRU )
In Part 3 – The body metallic colour & clear-coats, transfers on the headstock and final coats of lacquer. ( https://youtu.be/KCCGHDISl00 )
In part 4 – Hardware & Electrics, where it is unwise to ‘cheap-out’ on items. Ageing Chrome & Nickel accessories. ( https://youtu.be/WBnXUAw2U1c )
In part 5 – Headstock, neck and fingerboard preparation for the Relic Custom Shop look and feel. ( https://youtu.be/BFosHko3b0U )
In Part 6 – Time to take the big step and Relic The Body, Conductive Paint & Final Clear-Coat. ( https://youtu.be/aG53hJO02eI )
In Part 7 – Headstock and neck, the final leg of sanding, cutting compound, polishing and buffing to a mirror glaze. Final sanding of the back of the neck ( https://youtu.be/9bjxlCbYJyU )
In Part 8 – The body is sanded, cut, polished and buffed to a mirror glaze. Followed by lacquer checking and fitting the electrics and hardware. Nearly there… ( https://youtu.be/ifnJ4VyXlqs )
In Part 9 – The guitar is now complete and it’s time for a set-up. The doorbell rings as the final item is delivered to complete the guitar project build. ( https://youtu.be/s3NPbR8Y2S0 )
In Part 10A It’s time to compare the “Bluebird” guitar up against the Fender Custom Shop Telecasters and an American Pro Telecaster and ask some fundamental questions. ( https://youtu.be/DGlmFv2rQ4c )
In Part 10B Over the weeks I have been asked a number of questions regarding the T-Style guitar build project and in this video I attempt to give some answers. ( https://youtu.be/wvqBxZ6_x6E )
In this video it’s time to change-out the Fender Texas Special pick-ups for Fender Pure Vintage 64s hoping that this will be closer to the tones I am looking for in this Telecaster style build… Enjoy!

Both sound amazing!
When I was in my 20’s
I loved the Texas Specials.
Now that im my late 40’s, I prefer the vintage 64 sound
Awesome video have a great weekend stu ❤????
64 for me, even on the bridge it had twang and sparkled on crunch, and I love twang being a rockabilly player. My obs are exactly the same as your observations, good choice and well done. The 'one' problem with these videos and all have it, is the sound I hear depends so much on my speakers.
Interesting to compare – much preferred the Texas Specials myself ????????
The Pure Vintage have more clarity and they have a more nuanced sound with a bright chime. Seems like more clean headroom as well. Ultimately pickups come down to preference. Another great video and great comparison.
Excellent choice. Night and day for me, chalk and cheese for you. I'm looking at a Lollar Special T set for mine. I think your mic placement gave the impression they were thinner and brighter than the texas specials, but I know better. The clarity came through, regardless. For me it seems an overwound pickup lowers the treble's resonant peak frequency as well as adding body in the wrong place where all the body already is, so your descriptions all hit the nail on the head. We have the same tastes through-and-through, therefore I hereby nominate you for best channel on the toob lol
Enjoyed watching the swap out. Hoped to learn more about the tonalities.
The technical bits about the resistance levels in the pickups is intruiging.
I think overall I preferred the texas specials insofar as I could tell the difference. The 64's seemed to emphasise the tele's twanginess ( technical term there )????.
But what do I know, I have a les paul and headphones????????.
Loved the series, keepit coming.
Blessing Stu
