2025 is “Year of the Bucket! Affectionately referred to as “Bucket,” Barb’s newest axe is a Behren’s stainless steel tub, small enough to fit on a plane. Simulated cat gut bass guitar string made by Superior Bass Works. Barbara uses effects pedals for an array of different tones, controlled with the right hand, while tapping out time with the heel of the foot. Some washtub players have a neck on the bass, which is not the same as playing the traditional way of bending the stick for high and low tones. Some also play with a glove, Barb plays with bare fingers, using index fingers of both hands. This traditional type of washtub is one of the most difficult to record, due to exceptionally low tone. (A standup contra bass is 2x lower than a four string electric bass, while the one string washtub bass is 3x lower.) For best bass sound, please use earbuds or headphones.
