I was a huge metallica fan as a kid/teen. I even liked Black Album but it wasn't my fav. Then load came out and i turned my back on them and gave ALL my shirts away that said Metallica which was almost all my shirts.
I didn't pay them no mind for YEARS. But when I see them still kicking, it makes me really happy to know that a group of beer chugging pot smokling metal heads, literally conquered the World with riffs. ALWAYS REMEMBER, METALLICA CONQUERED THE WORLD WITH METAL!!! They deserve to have everyones praise
Is it me or has any stock preset meant to sound like something NEVER sounds remotely close to what it claims it sounds just like?
I need megadeths now, maybe stornado of souls or holy wars, that would be so cool
There was no slaving into a Marshall/ EL34 power section for the main rhythms (James) on Puppets. This has been confirmed by Rasmussen himself. It was all 2c++.
with marshall the tone is closer to the original, and in my opinion the EQ is the number one that matters to the tone
I found a Recto with the low rolle off and 6100, 900, or 800 with a boost in font of an aby box works well for their tone.
Next metallica tone copy, …And Justice For All guitar tone. My favorite heavy tone of all time of metallica.
One thing I recently got into are the late 70s Marshall branded speakers and the cabs all together. After acquiring t2876 and t3053 loaded cabs, can’t believe I never realized my GT-75 cab was so inadequate.
Happy rocking
Not an 81, it was a Duncan Invader
As far as slaving the Mesa through a Marshall Power Amp, I'd wager they were doing it for much the same reason as the legendary John Sykes (RIP). That is, it's brighter (as you pointed out yourself). They liked the preamp gain structure of the Mesa MK iic+ (and who doesn't), but wanted less sponginess in the low end, and a brighter overall tone. The JCM 800's power amp would give them a tighter low end and a brighter attack, but it's drive wasn't as appealing (also, stock 800's are pretty dry gain-wise). It's almost exactly what Sykes was doing around that time, only he was using a Mesa MKiii Coliseum. I think he was also known to do it in reverse (so to speak), slaving a JCM 800 into a Mesa power amp and through it's graphic eq. (I'm also sure that some of this was done because they simply wanted to create a kind of "secret sauce" that would be hard to replicate by others. Guitar players in the 80's and early 90's were like chefs when it came to keeping studio tone secrets.)
Edit to add that I can almost swear I remember them saying that in recording puppets there were no pedal used for boosting the signal going into the amp for the rhythm cuts. It was just the gain from the preamp into the slaved power amp.
That black dahlia nocturnal tone was always pretty killer in my opinion.
Nope! and youl never get it, nobody well. because it was shit! and flash gear heads like you simply cant bring yourselves to lower your standards enough. even today people debate what they were actually playing. that sound like a good tone to you? and the truth is that band has never known how to use an amp. thats why they dont.
For the digital side of things, have you considered using an IR captured from the actual guitar tracks of MoP? I know it's a bit of a cop out, but it really gets that sound!
Hey Taylor who modded your original 50? Can you make a video of the modded amp? How much did you pay to mod it?
I am surprised you did not even consider the V30 IR. Just saying. I was blown away with TONEX. You can nail down any tone with it. I was kind of curious what the tone sounded like with the Tube Screamer in the chain. LOL I guess I will never know.
Slaving is pretty common. Increased headroom is definitely a good reason, but a 2c+ doesn’t need to be loud to sound good. Maybe they just like the sound from the Marshall power amp more or the 2c+ they had added some type of distortion they didn’t like. Who knows ????♂️
Now for the ultimate challenge. The CLAYMAN tone!!
That Puppet Master EQ was so accurate it was unreal!
A video I would like to see is an opeth sound video. Opeth is a band from Sweden if you're not familiar with them.
In my opinion, the best guitar tone was Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction.
That Friedman sounds way too acidy. Where's the ADA-MP1 for earlier tones & the JMP-1 for later Metallica tones? I'm just playin…kinda. lol. I like the video. 🙂
They liked the tone of Boogie but the power section of the Marshall
They all sound pretty terrible.
Amp simulations sound better than real amps
Great work Taylor. I really like Master Effects pedals through that EL34. Totally massive. I would have used tome WGS reaper HP50's.
No active pickups on that album.
Twas the Duncan Invader
To get that tone James and Kirk used a JCM800 for the power part and the gain and EQ they used the messa boogie mark 2c+, It's like a jcm800 slave to the messa boggie
I'm pretty sure they were using Mesa-Boogie amps back then.
I am surprised they never used EVM12L in the studio since the guys at Mesa absolutely loved them back then.
Missing a RAT pedal. That was Hetfields sound. He played at a club I worked a bunch of times – saw it myself.
one eq in the front and one in the loop is the ultimate shaping tone kit !
Probably the main thing is the cabinet. I think they were using the G12-65 up until The Black Album when they switched to V30s
How about bodom tone?
You need to try Dut Beardy Islander preamp!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it`s amazing
system of a down steal this album is the greatest 00's distortion tone i've ever listened to. try that
Corrosion of Conformity tone????????
Iowa next plz
I too grew up hearing the black album constantly on the radio, then load and reload, and didn’t appreciate 80s Metallica until I was an adult
The pedals sounded by far the best
Metallica used the Mesa Mark IIC+ on Master of Puppets. Everyone knows that. They used Marshalls on Ride the lightning…
the track sounds like it was doubled
Fender Tonemaster=????
Is it mean that I think it all sounds like a Metal Zone. ????
