  • Great technique. reminds of the years of breaking in new guitar players, and the work of getting them to understand how to properly use the volume knob on the guitar to control the amount of breakup from the amp. Thanks again DR Bob.

  • 100%!!! The genius of Malcolm Young in a nutshell. Crank the amp, roll off the volume! I still can't help laughing when I think of how long it took me to discover great heavy rock rhythm tones tended to have less gain, not more.

  • Using way too much gain is likely the most common tone mistake most guitarists make. More and more gain does not make it louder and rawer and huger. It just compresses it more and makes it sound small and fizzy. And friends, that's even worse live in a small room than it is on a recording. So turn your damn gain down a little next time you rock out at Billy Bob's Corner Bar 🙂

  • I've never seen a guitarist that will turn down the gain. You try to discuss it with them on a technical level and they just look at you and maybe mock your laugh. They can't understand how much better and clearer it sounds when you adjust the gain properly for recording as opposed to live. I'm recording some metal songs for a buddy and guitar player has horrible tone but he wants to sound like Dave Mustaine.

  • good tip.. this is yet another reason to always run a DI guitar track when recording.. covers your ass and gives you options.. thanks Bobby!

  • I listen on a good set of Audio Technicas. And I'm also a Cubase user. t would be very helpful if you were to highlight the tracks you're playing. For us old blind guys!
Love your channel and I've been s subber for a while.

  • DUDE! You should turn up the guitars in that mix!! ????I can still hear the drums a little!! ????

  • Veeery interesting Bobby, thx man.
So essentially by reducing the input levels you're putting a bit of a low pass filter on the rhythm guitars, reducing the amount of distortion, which in turn removes the added harmonics which sits them down in the mix further (i.e. sends them to the back a bit) letting the lead guitar with more high end harmonics cut through (or sit in the front of the mix)… that a correct understanding Bobby? 🙂
BTW this method could apply to any instruments you're trying to balance out in a mix, right?
    Cool video man thx!

  • During the initial key change one of the rhythm G's makes a big flub and its driving me crazy lol. Otherwise super informative and helpful as usual, Doc. I find a gentle chorus/flange can do wonders for helping a lead G cut through a chunky mix, but that's genre dependent I suppose

  • Worth a try. But getting a guitar player to turn down is like hoping a drummer will show up to practice on time. Seriously though, great tio as always, doc!

  • distorted guitars eat everything haha
that’s why it’s also harder to make drums cut when working with metal, and you have to use samples most of the times

  • What!!??? Turn down the guitar going to the beautifully distorted amp..?? FOR THE SOLO??? Are you mad? Have I slipped into an alternate timeline where everything's the opposite of what used to be when I went the loo? Is the music of the spheres actually the musings of a mouse that slipped through a portal and became God??? Have I finally slipped through the cracks? I've just watched this three times as I thought I missed something.. ???? but it makes so much sense.. Now! Wizardry and physicistacal mastery just adjusted my view of reality.. Thanks doc! I hope I'm awake now! ???? Awesome as ever! Thank you ????????????️✨
