Which EVH Solos Deserve (Even) More Love? | 100 Guitarists Podcast
Naturally, every recording Eddie Van Halen ever played on has been pored over by legions of guitar players of all styles. It might seem funny, then, to consider EVH solos that might require more attention. But your 100 Guitarists hosts have their picks of solos that they feel merit a little discussion. Some of these are deep cuts—get ready for some instrumental bonus tracks and Van Halen III mentions—and some are among the biggest radio hits of their time. Just because their hits, though, doesn’t mean we don’t have more to add to the conversation.
We can’t cover everything EVH—Jason has already tried while producing the Runnin’ With the Dweezil podcuast. But we cover as much as we can in our longest episode yet. And in the second installment of our current listening segment, we’re talking about new-ish music from Oz Noy and Bill Orcutt.

I think VH III is a great album. It’s just a different band much like the Sammy era was different from the Roth era. There’s a lot of great stuff on there.

My contributions: One Foot Out The Door, Star Fleet, Fools, Secrets. Oh, and gotta show love for the solo in I'll Wait.
Since we are bending the rules so much, my "under-appreciated" VH moment is during the slow bridge in Panama. Ignoring tuning down, there is a jazzy arpeggiated F chord against E minor tonality (before "we're running a bit hot tonight") that is profoundly weird. This moment unites the rockin', "hits" side of 1984 with the bizarre explorations on the deep cuts. It is a delicious, subversive moment that hides in plain sight.
Fair Warning gets all the love from the hardcore fans, but 1984 is the schizzle, man.
I was puzzled by "Beat iIt" but at 11:21 Nick has a different theme than the subject line… I agree with every superlative imaginable (e.g. best solo of the 1980s, maybe ever) but it is a weird pick given the subject line.
Some great shout-outs here, esp. Push Comes to Shove (top 5 solo, IMHO) and (to a lesser extent) She's The Woman… Not sure if mentioned but I would add (a) outro of Drop Dead Legs (obviously) (b) Big River (the tapping part of the solo is classic VH and quite a fret-stretch, IIRC)
For the record, the “Hot For Teacher” solo is Edward doing a tribute to Clapton in Cream. Van Halen III “Year to the Day”. The solo is so unlike anything Ed did. Just a phenomenal solo.

"So This Is Love?" has one of my favorite Edward solos. Not the flashiest, but so bluesy. The phrasing is great. ????????????

EVH's ????solo on "Mine all Mine" off OU812 is one of his best.
I’ll pick I’m the One
Impossible to pick really; is there any”bad Eddie” I think not
Mean Streats solo is underrated, that solo start is mesmerizing.
EVH solos….some are brilliant. But some are a cobbled together mish mash of his licks/tricks with no connection to the song. The groove and solo on I'm the One is a masterclass by EVH.
Push Comes to Shove is just genius, twists and turns like an F1 car! I also really like the chaos and looseness of the solo in Hang 'em High
BLACK AND BLUE
One Foot Out the Door has a blistering solo. Fair Warning is so good.
When it's Love has the most restrained and exquisite solo. Not the biggest Van Hagar fan but the vocal performance is also heroic.
Definitely shades of yacht rock on this track. Love it! ????
5150 the song, as a whole is underappreciated. Love Walks In is an absolutely fantastic solo.
Drop Dead Legs has a really great solo that I don't think gets much attention. Great song overall and the only Van Halen solo that comes to mind that I'd call "jazzy".
Push Comes to Shove solo is a masterclass in phrasing.
