10 Ideas For More Effective Rhythm Guitar Tones – That Pedal Show
Are you struggling for somewhere to sit in the mix? Are you and the other guitar player clashing sonically and/or harmonically? If so, young Daniel and I offer up these 10 ideas for you try when playing ‘rhythm’ guitar.
As we have opined many times, ‘rhythm’ guitar is a bit of a catch-all term. To us they’re just parts in songs, nevertheless this show isn’t about how to nail your Nile Rodgers funk chops, or achieve seamless synchronicity like Malcolm and Angus. Moreover it’s about some tonal suggestions that will bring interest and separation to parts in a song. We talk about volume, EQ, modulation and delay for the most part, to act as springboards for your own perfect dive into the music. Wow, that was cheesy.

This one was fun to play along to.
That intro was downright sexy. Beautiful job guys. ❤
When your job is what you love doing! ♥imagine playing around in that office every day, I find myself being quite jealous ????????
My Boss ME-70 had this ‘Hum->Sing Coil’ setting that was a savior for fitting my Blues Jr into our band mix in smaller settings. Sure it’s just an EQ with light compression, but…
Turned my Fuzz and TS into very usable tones behind singer.
Am I the only guitarist that dislikes chorus?
This is one of the best episodes I've watched. Super useful! Many of the things you talk about, I found out myself through years of playing in bands and jams.
Magic begins when you start to connect brain, ears and heart.
I was going to ask you to do a video about this and tonight discovered it already exists. Well done guys.
I really like these practical ones. Great stuff.
the Fender Engager Boost is a marvellous quick fix EQ/Boost, quite as a churchmouse and doesnt change your tone colour at all!!????
{Appropriate things}
whats the name of start music?
After less than ten minutes, I find this episode very inspiring! I struggle sometimes with my rhythm playing. Sometimes I find myself thinking "man, this is f*cking boring", and this will help me think a bit differently and do something else. Also, less notes per chord is a good idea, I don't have to play the whole chord, I remind myself of that sometimes.
Man, this intro jam is excellent! Thanks for the ear candy!
I always have my bass at 0 on my amp???? I play rhythm guitar and sing, not bass and sing????
Intro ♥
Old vid but still great to revisit.
The gate flanger of the boss bf3 does a great tremolo job too. Very different, very distinctive.
Love that Tele
Turned my headphones up for this jam!
Late to the party on this one, but this has to be one of my favorite eps ever. Amazing and inspiring!
I wish eq/drive/fuzz pedals had a hp switch at 75hz and 200hz. It would make the getting out of the bass/kick’s way so much easier
They should have one person in the video.they seem more interested in banter than useful content.
Mitch and Noel were so lucky they had that Jimi kid! Touted for lead but sweetest rhythm guitarist!!
I gotta tell you guys, i was watching something else at 1.75 speed and this video was next. The initial jam sounded like some prodigy meets buckethead type of shit, it was awsome.
If a
As Jaco used to say……… women, children and rhythm section first………….
The underdrive trick was excellent
gopferdom!!! first time you ever stopped selling yourself so damn short! you are UNREAL good°!
Sooo much static wheres all this static coming from find it and destroy it before it takes over the world
Would love to see you guys review some of the Radial Engineering stuff. What are your thoughts regarding boost pedals that contain transformers?
Amazing! Grettings from mexico!
Another anagram for you: LADS WHO HATE P.T. (as in physical training)…or T.P. which stands for toilet paper in Canada.
I got so many ideas from this episode! I can't believe how I've overlooked using tremolo.
And a final comment………”stop thinking about it as rhythm and lead guitar, just guitar parts in the song” YES! Absolutely spot on………this has been one of the most enjoyable videos you’ve done guys……….loved it, and got lots of ideas from it! ????????????????
???????? classic pub band playing at 35:00 DAN………..”oh, Mick sounds good with the fast tremolo…..I’ll do it too, but with MORE!” So Mick has to stop! ???????????????? Great point well made……….inadvertently! Love it! ????
Opening jam sounds like Allen Parsons project, very cool
Thanks a lot! I really needed that
