Yes, they are niche instruments, but a 12-string bass is unbeatable when it comes to adding an extra dimension to your bass playing.

Everyone from Led Zeppelin to Pearl Jam has quietly (or not so quietly) slipped a 12-string into their music. In today’s new video, Ian Allison looks at his favourite 12-string bass performances of all time.

We’re also giving you a PDF workbook where we’ve added the tab and notation from the video!

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott 🙂

  • I'd love to hear what the Chris Squire approach on a 12 string would sound like. One high E tuned up to B and the other tuned down

  • If there is anything i learned from this video, it would be that i do not need a 12 string bass. What a waste.

  • Don’t say crack, Jez, yeah, please, not now. Cos you saying crack makes me think about crack, and I love crack. So can you not say crack?

  • Lots more 12 out there than I thought. Cool to know.
I believe Nick Lowe played one on Dave Edmunds Creature From The Black Lagoon.
Did Les Claypool ever play an 8 or a 12?

  • Apart from the fact that only about 10% of bass players could ever afford such an instrument, no one really 'needs' a 12-string bass. Let's be real here…

  • Gosh I really love Zeppelin and Cheap Trick, but none of those clips sold me on it being cooler than playing a 4 string and letting the guitarist do his job. And typically I find prog super boring but the 5th tuning and all the repetition on that Yes song was pretty cool.

  • Jamie (James) Hunting can man a 12 string bass too!!! Look at the Union throwback video; last third!!

  • One (albeit roundabout but more straightforward than the method used here) way to get this effect is to run your bass into a splitter, one channel going into an octaver and then into a subtle chorus, and then sum that back in with the other raw channel. Instant 12 string bass.

  • I love multi-string versions of instruments. The first guitar I picked up in my adulthood and really tried to learn to play was an old Ovation Applause 12-string. I soon got myself an Ovation flagship line (not the Adamas but the best of the Ovations, a super-shallowbody cutaway electric-acoustic 12 string. Has a cherry tigerstripe flametop and is in pristine condition to this day. I don't know why I learned guitar on those 12's instead of a 6 string, it just sort of happened. This video was an amazing music education. Discovering the secret behind the sound of all these songs were 8 and 12 string bass guitars was very cool. It was a pleasure to hear you play along, you shred those axes man.

  • The song that reawakened my interest in octave basses is "Leah" by the Italian doom metal band Messa. Very cool opening riff in 5/4 with natural harmonics and a bend behind the nut on the headstock. I didn't even know it was a bass until I saw a live video.

  • I love my 12 string and it’s really made a huge difference in a lot of band scenarios. Check out John Gallagher from Raven. He was the Billy Sheehan of multi-string instruments.

  • Biggest hurdles to getting into multi-course basses: 1. Guitar stores don't carry them, even the big ones have two walls of mostly Fender basses whose only differences are color and what part of the world its manufactured, but somehow they can't find room for ONE 8-string. Schecter makes several, they are reputable and make a ton of sexy af guitars and basses… So anyways you can't really test out an 8- or 12-string before deciding, you have to just pull the trigger and fork over at least $700 and see how it goes, and this is a big turn off and deterrent, compared to 12-string guitar which you will find in almost every guitar store. 2. If you do get one, good luck finding instructional material… how am I supposed to get better at holding down three bass strings with one finger? 6 or 9 if I'm playing chords? 3. EVEN IF you do get good at it, good luck talking your band into letting you use one. Bassists are like girlfriends: everyone wants one but the ones that do don't give a rip about keeping them happy. Great video btw! Its a fantastic instrument with a HUGE sound, Doug Pinnick rules ????

  • You could not possibly appeal more to my cupidity. Oh, I want one. As much because it would be a nightmare to tune as anything else. But seriously, I like that deep, muddy prog sound that feels like the flu and this seems a perfect fit.

  • I worked at Hamer guitar factory. I helped build the “JEREMY” Duo-Tone bass. I also owned your model. I didn’t like it I returned it. Really hard level out dead spots.

  • Recently got a 12 string…a cheap knock off for 350 bucks. Definitely need to replace the machine heads but also need to replace some octave strings trying to set the darn thing up. Regular guitar strings don't even get close to the tuning pegs. Anybody have a connection somewhere that sells the appropriate length of strings for the octave sets?

  • Avenged Sevenfold's "Blinded in Chains" has a small 8-string bass solo…crazy to think Johnny Christ played a Schecter 8-string through his GK gear lol

  • Does anyone know if there's a 12 string bass that acts more like the bass VI? As in a 6 string bass with 2 strings per "string" ?
