So this lesson is a BIGGY!

As in, although I may seem to be covering a pretty simple concept, I believe this is one of the main things that separates great sounding players and mediocre sounding players.

I say “one of the main things” because there are a few different elements that I believe make up a great sounding bass player, and this is just two of them. I should say though, I don’t believe the list is huge… I think there are just a few key things someone needs to master to be a great musician… the gag is, those things, although few, can take a lot of hard work, determination and dedication to master.

Anyway… back to this lesson! 😉

You’ve heard two guys playing the same riff, right? One guy sounds pretty cool… the other guy sounds AMAZING! But, it’s the same riff!

The first time I noticed this phenomenon was in drummers. I’d listen to two drummers playing the same beat… one would sound good, the other would sound amazing.

How is this possible?!…

Three simple things… time feel, articulation and dynamics.

In this lesson I discuss two of these elements, articulation and dynamics and give you some simple exercises to get you going on your journey towards becoming a monster of GROOVE! 😉

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott 🙂

  • Hi , does it make a difference where placing an amplifier on stage to hear yourself and not say to compete volume wise with other band members ? .

  • That is probably my favorite p bass. Both in looks and tone. It's got that perfect wooden kinda hollow punch, if that makes sense lol. There is something special about that 1 especially coupled with the great dynamics in your playing

  • Articulation, dynamics, time feel. This lesson is focused on articulation and dynamics. Another lesson in the future will be dedicated to time feel as have lessons in the past been dedicated to time feel. But this lesson is going to be focused on articulation and time feel. You’re adorable Scott

  • You lessons are great. One question-you’ve heard it thousand times-why do you wear glove on your left hand?

  • This is a great lesson! I've always wondered why my playing always sounded flat and dull. I'll be trying this out asap. Thanks Scott for all your videos!

  • Dude, thanks for all your effort. I really dig the way you shelve the ego and talk to us as a friend.

  • This guy is truly the Chauncey Gardiner of bass teachers. Look to Drew Gress and Mike's Master Classes for all things this jackass is completely unable to teach.

  • Please do NOT hesitate to do a more focused lesson on those stings/trills. I've seen you briefly cover them a few times like this lesson, but I'm having an awful time figuring out how to place them. Only been able to work out a couple of simple fills that use them a little, but it would be great to be able to improvise with them a little more and I just can't quite get my ear around them.

  • I love you dude. Sick…sick style! You make me wanna get deep in my bass. Seriously, thank you!

  • I read about why you wear the glove(s) and I think it also helps the sound, I personally dislike, and haven't heard the sound you get when most bass/guitar players when running their fingers up and down the strings, its a high-ish pitched scratchy sound that kinda makes me cringe a bit when I hear some musicians.

    So thanks to you man!:D

  • Great lesson! I would have like to hear the first lick without any slides or rhythmic variations, but only articulations and dynamics.

  • I Understand what yours saying it's just like Steve Jordan he can play the same beat you've heard 1000 time but for some reason when he plays it it's just amazing
