Simon McBride – Playing With Deep Purple, Awesome New Pedalboard, Engl Amp & More!

Simon drops in to collect his new pedalboard and treat us to some jaw-dropping playing

Welcome to the show! It’s a treat to welcome back an old mate, Simon McBride to the studio. He has (relatively) recently taken on one of the biggest gigs in rock as the guitar player in none other than Deep Purple!
In this show we talk through Simon’s Purple experience and take a walk through the pedalboard he’ll be using for the next big tour with the band. As ever, Simon’s incredibly melodic and mercurial playing is equal parts inspiring and astounding, so sit back and enjoy the stories and tones.

  • Guy on the left constantly looking at someone off camera from the start and keeps disappearing and back again VERY irritating and disrespectful to the guest.

  • Guys – please forgive here as I cannot contact Simon directly but – if you will allow me….

Simon. Deep Purple has been 'crying out' for you since Mr Blackmore left. Thank you for a) for your talent and b) agreeing to the gig!

  • Simon's a cracking guitar player! Purple has always had great musicians, throughout their long history, some of the band's members no doubt were a better fit than others… Tommy Bolin for me, was an extremely low point… I have no idea how they ever thought it was going to work out with that guy! (although the album "Come Taste the Band"… did have its moments). But that said… Simon's a great fit! He has that particular "firebrand style" that the band needs! But the singer, "Ian Gillan"… the singer of their classic mark II lineup! What the hell is going on with him? He used to be great… now he's absolutely dreadful!

  • Great guitarist, but has no discernible style. For example, when you hear Blackmore playing, you know it's him without checking.

  • I loved the bit where Simon was showing how to play 'Smoke on the Water'. And he was emphasising playing it simply and straightforward. Then the other guy said, "You forgot the pinch harmonic". And Simon said, "I'll leave that to Zak".

    ????????????

Zak really loves his pinch harmonics.

  • I saw and heard Simon last July with Deep Purple for the first time, live here in Italy. I was soooo happy to hear him: he has an enormous sound on stage, he plays flawless both slow and fast runs, he has a great vibrato and dynamic too. It reminds me some Lukather on steroids and a sort of Satriani but with his own personal taste.
Really enjoyable on the new record too, he's amazing. I am so happy that I have discovered him!

  • If I could ever make more than one person shake their heads in amazement, a la 1:13:41, then I've done alright!!! Simon is such a great player. Been lucky enough to have seen his solo band live…even had my shred-buddy in awe!

  • Simon is an absolute 1st class guitar player, uber flexible and 100% focused on his craft. He knows what to play and when but is just so good at adding those little amazing nuances that seperate him from anyone else. He is an awesome guitarist and looks like a thoroughly nice approachable chap. This was a great session and interview and I am very jealous for his pedal board … and guitar mastery… sound … well all of it actually! Well done Dan and Mick for another great output!

  • Interesting that Tommy Bolin is not being mentioned. Sure, Tommy had his drug problems, but he was still a creative genius!!! Ode to G!!!
