Scott Walker’s Masterpiece | The Untold Genius of Scott 4 (1969)

Although largely unknown in his native America, Scott Walker enjoyed huge success in the UK in the mid-60s with his group The Walker Brothers. He then consolidate that success with his own BBC TV show and a string of four outstanding solo albums from 1967-1969.
Described by many as his finest work, Scott 4 was never released in the U.S. and was a flop when it was released in the UK in November 1969. However, it went on to influence generations of musicians and songwriters and is one of my favourite albums of all time.

  • Good thing. I was a personal friend. of Scott Havent' played it for decades. But I heard it way back 1969. All was his own work for the first time. So you are kind of late….!

  • Most people think Scott 3 is the best, but I also like Scott 4 better.

After discovering him in Kijak's documentary '30 Century Man' completely by chance, I fell hard for Scott's story and music. I'm an American, so I hadn't had any exposure except 'The Sun Sin't Gonna Shine Anymore' so many years earlier. What an eye-opener! I have come to appreciate everything from his teen demos to his dark trilogy and 'Soused'. I even like a few tracks from the country records.

  • Duchess is a whole different level of genius and beauty, the type of song that should have gone up in NASA's time capsule to groove the galactic federation instead of a daft Chuck Berry track.

  • Really interesting thank you. I discovered Scott through Julian Cope who is also a much underrated talent

  • Although I loved his voice and early work, some of Scotts later offerings, were pretty strange, and a hard listen.

  • I have read many reviews of Scott's work over the years and this IMO is easily the best and most informative. I am 71 and both my father and mother loved The Walker Brothers, especially hearing Scotts haunting voice. Like most they never took to his later work. That is a pity as Scott 4 is for me the absolute pinnacle of his work, terms are much overused these days but it really is a masterpiece. Love your vinyl collection, some very very rare albums.

  • I was curious about the 4 Men With Beards label and their catalog looks impressive. you indicate that 'Scott 4' isn't good and I wonder about the rest of their catalog. I listened to Dion's take on Purple Haze and I really liked it. at first I wanted to stop it about 20 seconds in, but I'm glad I let it play. thanks, Andrew.

  • THANK YOU!!!! This video is worth its length in gold. There is so little info out there on the arrangers, and players on this album. Dave Richmond even had to come to youtube to settle things about who played bass on "The Old Man is Back Again." He said he played his Burns Black Bison on that track. That was his first inkling that it was him. Then he checked his session notes and confirmed it.

  • Great exposé as usual, Andrew. For a deeper dive I highly recommend the documentary called "Scott Walker: 30 Century Man" which takes his career all the way through to his 4AD album "The Drift".

  • I bought all Scott’s solo albums on the day of release. Thinking back, it was a totally random thing because we were all soaking up psychedelic rock bands at the time. Can’t explain it but Scott’s voice was other worldly and it just moved me immensely even though I was still a teenager. Heck, I even named my son after him. Can’t help thinking that if he’d really chased fame he’d have been up there with Sinatra.

  • Thanks Andrew! This is also one of my favorite albums! I did manage to get a good audiophile reissue on vinyl a while back and I pull it out frequently.

  • Scott had a great unique voice! Scott 4 is a terrific album. Been a big fan forever.

  • Like you said many of us rediscovered Scott through Fire Escape in the sky.. after hearing that i had to get all the solo albums, luckily Reddingtons rare records had them all and pretty cheap! As Julian Cope said, when you hear his voice, you melt into the walls….

  • I’ve got to thank Adam Buxton for playing the stunning ‘The Old Man’s Back Again’ on BBC R6 for introducing me to this amazing album. Great video about a wonderful LP. It’s one of my faves too.

  • The film The Brutalist won some film awards and was dedicated to Scott Walker. His influence continues.

  • Got this album and a couple of his more recent ones. I really admire that he was true to his art. Some of his later stuff is a tough listen(eg; Tilt). 4 has so many interesting songs though, I love it

  • I've bought the 1/2 speed master on your recommendation Andrew. Not usually a fan of Miles' work so I'm trusting you here.

  • Look, Scott Walker was genius and a brilliant vocalist and songwriter. But somewhat self-regarding: listen to his last two albums!

  • What a lovely video. I was a massive Julian Cope fan and had read of his love for Scott Walker but couldn’t find a copy of Fire Escape in the Sky. Then Boy Child came out and I could finally discover the godlike genius.
I’m from Blackpool so the ABC cinema story was a great revelation … and it ties into The Beatles. Legend has it that Paul McCartney phoned his dad up from the phone box round the side on King Street to sing him his new song “Scrambled Eggs”.

  • Thank you so much for this video, and for taking Walker's music seriously. I tracked down all those CD reissues in the late 90s, only to go buy them all again in 2000 when the remasters came out, but I've always treasured them. I will never forgive the editors of the documentary about Scott, 30 Century Man, for including a clip of David Bowie scoffing at Scott's vocals on "The Old Man's Back Again," and commenting "well, I wasn't inspired by that." Dragons of disgust, indeed. (Don't get me wrong, Bowie's the best, but they shouldn't have included that bit.) So I really appreciated your praise for that track, and all the info about the bass player, which I didn't know! I'll track down the Dion album too–thanks!

  • My favourite album is Scott 3, but my favourite track is "Angels of Ashes". His voice is sublime.
