Van Halen (Roth-era) riffs with Van Hagar tone… will it be the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS?! Your good buddy Uncle Ben Eller intends to find out!!!
I love those glossy wet/dry/wet tones Eddie used during the Hagar days, and I ADORE those sassy Roth-era riffs! Let’s mash em up and see what happens. In today’s video, I’m gonna hit you with a TON of my favorite VH riffs from 1 – 1984 using this SLICK tone I’ve cooked up, then give you a whole rundown on how I’m getting this tone (and so can you!). Get into it!!!
Playing my MIJ EVH Wolfgang into the Soldano SLO100 Rackmount head, with some magic from the UA OX. I’ll tell ya all about it!
What riffs do you think worked more better with this sound? Let me know in the comments!
And stay tuned for a video dedicated to my recent adventure playing with the mighty MASTODON as part of the Tool in the Sand 2025 Festival in the Dominican Republic! Details and rig rundown are coming at ya very soon! It was the raddest show I’ve ever played, can’t wait to tell you about it!

Damn that's alot of gain for Van Halen ain't it??? lol
Damn, I love the sound without the pitch shift too! Both sound awesome. Great playing as usual.
That drop dead legs riff is the one bro
I always gravitated to the PRE 1986 VH stuff, the older stuff is more aggressive and the Hagar feel was more POP – to me, I guess that had a lot to do with his singing style.
I always enjoy your videos because I learn a new or different way to play something I THOUGHT I KNEW, you have introduced me to PARTs of songs that I was missing or JUST playing wrong.
I just picked up BACKING TRACKs a couple of years ago from NERD HALEN, but it is nice to KEEP UP with the greats through my PA set up. I really appreciate your channel – Kudos on the MASTODON gig!
that riff at 2:18 is sick!!!!!
❤
I am convinced that I'm the one has a consistent a string
Most excellent Uncle Ben: Personally, I myself have been struggling with calling EVH Edward. But apparently that's what everyone except Alex is really supposed to do. DLR always called him Edward, even back in the mid-70's – if you've ever listened to some early live recordings. Alex (or Al to his compadres) gets away with calling EVH Ed. Everyone else must use Edward or risk a revenant haunting one's main guitar and always forcing the G-string to go 80 cents flat…
Tell you what Ben, that guitar is insane! Don't knock your swing either mate, great playing as always!
I just fired up a UAFX Lion with an Eventide Micro Pitch last night. Lord. Direct stereo into my DAW kills all 5150 tones. Anything later I have the Peavey and EVH 5150 actual amps but the UA Lion is amazing!!!
Just found your channel!!!
Is that Pazuzu on your desk??
Drop dead legs for the win. Sounds insane. No question the early riffs are special but there is some incredible stuff buried in V Hagar era. Almost anything off Carnal Knowledge frankly.
Who were those old guys on stage with Uncle Ben down in the DomPub?
This is a lot of what we got with the 2007-2008 Van Halen tour with Roth… and Wolfie playing bass. I saw them live in Nashville on that tour, and we were on the floor, about 100 feet back from the stage on Ed's side. I even have a TON of iphone videos from that show. It seemed like that Ed had a couple of buttons on his pedalboard where he could turn the wet/dry/wet off for stuff that needed the flanger, like Unchained.
It's too saturated. Eddie's tone was way less distorted. You're compensating with effects when you should be more focused on picking dynamics.
Don't use micro pitch on Old Van Halen
Girl Gone Bad????
What is the riff at 10:29?
A little late to watching , but the old tunes sound so much more alive and in your face with the original tone. I actually dont think if Ed used the Hagar tone in the early years they ( or he ) wouldve been as popular. When you first played some riffs I was like , that sounds like every 80's guitar player. Kind of hiding behind the sound. If you know what Im trying to say?…. Ed didnt hide behind his sound , he was the sound , the tone , and his playing didnt need effects. Not that the latter needed effects , it just sounded fuller and Ed became more song oriented with Sammy.
Yeah after that full EVH Gear Wet/Dry/Wet video, I made an apartment friendly one with a helix, a Peavey Bandit, and two Peavey Rages. It’s ridiculous, and incredible.
It also does the Joshua Travis “yuck” sound really well, if I set the pitch shifters just right. Best rig I’ve ever played
So now we have to do the vice versa which is the Hagar riffs with the classic raw tone
This is what it would’ve sounded like if Sammy had agreed to play the old back catalogue on the live without a net tour
I think it would be cool to hear some other classic hair metal riffs with that tone.
As far as the reference to the greatest "yeah" in rock history, my favorite one actually comes from Sammy in the cover of "Won't Get Fooled Again" at 5150. It's my favorite.
