Fulltone OCD V1.7, V2 & OCD GE Overdrive Pedals (Comparison demo & buffer effects)

We demo and compare the Fulltone OCD V1.7, OCD V2 and the Custom Shop OCD GE overdrive pedals through a Marshall Plexi amp and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

The Fulltone OCD is without question among the most loved and successful guitar overdrive pedals of all time. Introduced in 2005 (we think!), its creator Mike Fuller wanted an OD pedal with plenty of dynamics and headroom, a relatively open EQ response and of course plenty of full, rich and dynamic overdrive. It is noted for responding well off the guitar’s volume pot and is used in pretty much every musical genre you can mention.
There were a number of incremental changes to the design over the years from V1 to V1.7 – notably tweaking the midrange and adding germanium clipping diodes – then in 2017, Fuller surprised everyone with a V2, which is where we pick up the story in this video. Oh, and there’s a Custom Shop GE version too.
As a point of interest, this is also probably just about the best demonstration of what buffers to do your tone that we’ve stumbled on yet. Time stamps below…

  • I come back to this video now and then to help me mentally and relax. I had a 1.7 in high school back in 2008-2012 and sold it to my cousin. Ordered another odd reverb this past spring and again one of my favorites. I must collect an original 1.4 now for the chewiness differences. I just gotta have multiple versions of that pedal, ya know?

  • Is there a way to look up the serial number to determine which version I have? There's writing inside, but there's no mention of which version (V) it is.

  • After years of avoiding one, I'm now amazed why I waited so long. Outstanding pedal. Good enough for Don Felder, definitely good enough for me.

  • Just bought my 2nd MXR Super Badass Dynamic OD: such soft Dynamics!! some say its close to OCDs which I never tried, but soo happy with the Badass!

  • I lucked out and bought a version 1.7 OCD off Marketplace. The seller didn't know anything about it and just sold it as is. I bought it for a good price, $75, and opened it up to find it was a version 1.7! I have owned just about every major OD pedal out there, and this thing is the king. It handles every tone with perfection. It will never leave my pedal board.

  • Here at the end of 2024 to say I got a limited (to 5000) edition candy apple red OCD today. Love it!

  • They sound the same (v1 and v2). If there is a difference it isn't dramatically different, at least that's what I'm hearing here. I've watched countless videos comparing all the models and the difference is so minimal. Your amp, how you stack it, and your guitar is gonna make more of a difference than what OCD pedal you have.

  • Enjoying this video from a few years back. Just took my OCD Ge off the shelf and put it back on my board- what a great pedal it is.

  • The version two is better for humbuckers as its a bit more scooped. The great thing is the gain is useable over all the settings. The buffer is awesome in the new one. I understand why Dan prefers the original, as the mid freq are closer to the king of tone.

  • Is the Deja Vibe running at the begining of the chain or at the end of the chain goodly sirs?

  • i think the 2.0 has a sizzle to it I don't dig, but the 1.7 is get what you see folks. I have had them all and settled on 1.7 for me

  • V2 for me also. I feel like I used to crave that darker mid sound when I was younger but now as an old gent I want more treble or brightness etc. That doesnt apply to these "older…ish" gents I see so my theory needs work lol. That being said, V1, V2 etc, this thing can be dialed just how you like it, such a great pedal. I spent a lot of time researching a new distortion/OD and glad I went with this in the end. I usually prefer just my amp gain but this with a little OD in front is just nasty if you want it, less gritty but nice low amounts of dirt if you prefer

  • All of these years later, and I think this is one of the most versatile drives out there still… it can push and already overdriven amp and it can give you some pretty good distortion on a cleaner amp, good times!

  • Glad I purchased my OCD-GE b4 the company closed its doors. The price on all ocd's no matter which version are on the rise fast! Love my OCD!!!

  • Is this show supposed to be a very English version of Wayne’s World?? If so it’s spot on, I love it! Rock on

  • Big difference between the 1.7 and the 2.0
I have no use for the 2.0 unless I can borrow one and AB it with the other two which I do have .. maybe I’d like it but thinking , no

  • I generally prefer the added clarity of the v2 over the chewier 1.7. But I love the clipping in the germanium version.

  • Best drive sound I have ever heard. That made me literally cream myself was an OCD 1.7, 335 with PAFs in to .. a 1977 Ultralinear Twin Reverb.
Just something about the massive tight bottom end those amps have and this pedal made my bum twitch. Still got the pedal but foolishly sold the amp. *sigh

  • V1.7 sounds like there is a blanket over the amp speakers….V2 is warmer ..thicker…..1.7 sounds like a 90's mesa boogie amp…..not impressed with any of them…

  • V2 was the best and the Germ was the worst, everything before the v2 had messed up EQ, you'll always get people who say the earlier versions were better but generally for most guitars and amps the V2 is your best bet. All will rocket in price and be sought after now they don't make them anymore anyway so whichever one you have your blessed to have it.

  • For the amount of money a lot of people have lost trying different versions of the OCD, they could have bought one plus a SA EQ2 and essentially had every tonal version of the OCDs

  • I have an ocd v. 1.4 with one mythical germanium diode in it, D4, that I was running off of fulltone's "quiet" 9v power supply. I never was ecstatic with the way the fulltone power supply really introduced a ton of noise. I put the pedal on a voodoo labs dingbat tiny because it's so nice to travel with. It's powered by a truetone onespot pro with 9, 12 and 18v ports. Now I absolutely love the ocd v. 1.4 at 9 and 18volts. The ocd is dead silent and it does everything that we love the ocd for.

  • I have three 1.7s, one of them has 1.7 handwritten on the box but the circuit board is actually a 1.4. None of the three pedals sound the same, but the two "real" 1.7s have that mid push even in LP mode, while the older 1.7 with the 1.4 board sounds rather scooped, more like a v2 which is completely flat.

  • I love my V1.2 but I also like my 1.4. I recently bought the GE. I’d really like to use it in place of my 1.2 and retire the 1.2 (mostly due to the increased value)… but I haven’t gotten the GE to sound good enough to take over.
