The 90s Guitar Tone of Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains), Soundgarden, Steve Lukather, Steve Vai and many others was unique: Chewy low mids, big dynamic range and an overall darker sound than in previous decades. In this video, I’m showing why the Bogner Ecstasy (Bogner XTC), in this case the new 3550 Watt version, is the main secret behind our favorite 90s guitar albums (Facelift, Dirt, Superunknown, etc.) and riffs (Them Bones, We Die Young, Rusty Cage, Spoonman and many more. I’m showing you the Ecstasy Red Channel, Ecstasy Blue Channel and the great Clean Channel, as the design hasn’t changed much from the original Bogner Ecstasy 101B, released in 1992.

  • Bonus points for everyone sniffing out ALL the 90s riffs I am playing in this video. 😉 Hint: It's 4 in total.

  • I hear you on the sound but what about the Dual Rectifier of that period? Do you find this amp sounds and feels like the 101b even thought that is 100w? I have older Dual Rec modified, Revv Gen 120 and Bogner 20th EL34, now I am thinking of getting a Bogner 50w Ecstacy, Friedman BE-50 Deluxe or a Diezel D-Mol. I play a lot of 70s, 80s, 90s rock and metal. I can't decide between these amps. 🙁
Side note, often I like a tight precise tone for 80s rock and 70s rock and a boost can do that on Bogners.
I wish they made an Uberschall 50w. I thought Kim of Soundgarden was a Mesa Rectoverb guy? I'm sure he used a lot of amps. Because I have some nerve issues, and I'm getting older and don't care so much about perfecting my playing, I just want to enjoy and I love that my Bogner Shiva supports my playing like it plays itself. Any amp I own must be like that. My Revv is like that too, with EL34s. I need to determine if my next amp is the Bogner Ecstacy, Friedman BE-50 Deluxe or the Diezel D-Mol. I like heavily saturated amps too. I also like a lot of amps that were big in the 2000s. Diezel, Mesa, Bogner and some others were huge then.

  • Great tone! I hated the 90s actually, the 80s were bright, sunny and total fun and the 90s for me were dark and so was a lot of the music which I love.

  • You hold up a Bogner amp and I subscribe, that’s it! You are also spot on with your Marshall Modified “rant” video, my sentiments exactly. My only correction would be regarding effects loop on a plexi. The amp relies on power amp distortion as a whole, the effects would get distorted, hence no reason for an effects loop with a plexi. A Power Station is almost always the best way to add a loop.

  • Very nice playing and great prop for all things Bogner. You mention that Kim Thayil played a Bogner on Spoonman, I think that is incorrect. As per an interview with Michael Beinhorn, Chris Cornell played almost all the rhythm guitars on the record as he had a better feel and tone, Kim played the leads. But Cornell used a late 70s Marshall JMP 50 watt stack blended with a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier. There were no Bogners on that record. But you got a really close tone to the recording so kudos!

  • Glad someone finally tried Bogner. I’ve had a Goldfinger 45 SL for 2 years and desire nothing else.

  • I don't remember seeing Bogner in the 90s. It was more of an early to mid 2000s thing. In the 90s was all about Marshall, Orange, Vox, Mesa… less Fenders than today… lesser known companies like Sovtek and there was also the uprising boutique thing with Matchless, Soldano and others I can't remember now. But Bogner? I don't think so. Maybe in the very, very late 90s if much.
Hiwatt has been always present but in lesser degree.

  • Cool, thanks! What cab did you use? How much the sound and the feel of this amp depend on the cab?

  • This is still my favorite playing amp of all time. The Bogner XTC is still the king to me. I own a Mesa Mark VII and I still want one of these.

  • The XTC 101B is my main amp since 1998!!! Tried a lot of different great amp, always going back to the 101B. I even made a blue/red channel small 20w amp clone. Have the blue pedal (the big one, works in any fender amp). The only amp I use as much is the BRBS Vintage class 3+.
And you know what, now that there is 20w synergy amp, I want one with a Bogner Ecstasy module! 😀
