Rig Rundown – Gary Clark Jr. & Eric Zapata [2019]
Gary Clark Jr.’s longtime tech Dave Holman met with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger before their three-night sold-out run at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium for a look at Gary Clark Jr.’s simple, yet stellar, setup. Later, JB met with King Zapata who showed off how he uses his complex rig for layering deep soundscapes.

When Gary Clark Jr. took over the scene with his debut Warner release, Blak and Blu, he did it armed with this 2007 Epiphone Casino packed with the stock P-90s. “Red” stays strung with D’Addario Chromes (.011–.014–.018p–.028–.038–.049).
This ’90s Ibanez Blazer, a gift from Gary Clark Jr.’s mother, is where it all started. The Blazer stays strung with D’Addario Custom Nickel Roundwounds.

What I’m wondering is, what is that beautiful choir singing in the background?
"Yeah" "yeah" cool "yeah
Cool
Smoking Parliaments. ????
Fabulous.
I wouldn’t have recognized the music in the background if I hadn’t played guitar for a local production of Shrek the Musical.
great shirt john! and great rundown.
I was a single-minded Fender fan boy for so many years. If it wasn’t Fender I didn’t want to know about it. It was ridiculous. Now I embrace all kinds of guitars and brands. It’s great to see GC JR using stock Epiphones (Chinese no less) and even an 80s Ibanez.
As a child of the eighties I recall being gifted a three quarter size acoustic guitar which my mum wrapped round a tree in our garden. She Smashed the life out of it. I must have been very annoying as a child.
There was absolutely no reason for this man to bring up the Beatles. None.
Princeton treble on 10? WTF. that cuts not only through the mix, also through the ears
That looks like the original Supro pickup. It's a single coil even though it looks like a humbucker. I have similar guitar, but a 1961 Duo Tone with two pickups. It's a smaller scale guitar.
Zapatta has all that gear and flash ..he plays rhythm guitar so low in the mix he can't be heard ….
John is a nice guy, but so awkward!
65 blue face reissue? Lmao
Have you done anything to it? Naaah, just played it. Eric Zapata is my guitar hero 😉
Bit bloody cheeky having built in ads eh.
No wireless nonsense lol. That was priceless , that and that shut the choir up.
I love Gary Clark Jr. but his rig run downs are ALWAYS soooo anti-climactic 🙂 In other words, keep it simple stupid works. Maybe that's why his sound is so unique, it's 100% player, 0% gear.
Fat guy at his bedroom: "This guitar sucks. I need some Lollars". Gary Clark Jr. on a world tour: "Keep those chinese pickups, I'll deal with them".
They're singing Shrek the Musical during Zapatas interview!!
For the Esquire there Eric, Position one, all the way to the back or leftest most position if you're facing the guitar, That cuts out the tone control entirely, Giving you a more trebly sound, Or more spank I should say. Middle position is where the tone control kicks in, it works normal like any other guitar with a tone knob. and lastly furthest to the right that cuts out all the top end, gives it a very mellow bass like tone, It kind off simulates the neck pickup. Hope this helps.
I wish I could’ve bet on Gary 12 years ago.. I’d be a wealthier man.. ????????????????????????✊????
Wish they’d just stop making cigarettes. All they do is make people smell like shit before they die a horrible death. On a lighter note, GCJr makes me feel it to the bone.
Drinking game: Take a shot every time John or Eric says “Yeah”.
에릭자파타 최애 기타가 전부 '물론' 이라니.. 뿌듯함이. ㅎ
2007 is a new guitar?? That’s 13 years old… I guess it’s newer than a vintage guitar but still
He didn’t ask about his Bam Bam necklace :/
If Gary was cool he would do his own gear rundown :/
Eric 'It moves air' Zapata
Gary is being a little bit of a bitch not coming out and talking to John.
I fast forwarded looking for Gary C. But, no luck.
I saw Stryper at the Worcester Centrum 1989ish.
Zap use a two 15" EV speakers in his cab? Nice gear
We love Gary but Zapata es la onda !!
That damn Supro friggin nails that muddy waters tone.
At 30:50 blatant Doyle lick….lol…sounds good, though….
he music world has waited a long time for a Gary Clarke Jr, his aura, voice and playing, something special.
