  • MARTIN D-15M……..$1,699?…unless you can find a $700 coupon or a huge discount. I think I'd jump right on a NEW one for under $1,000. That's one of my favorite guitars.

  • Martins (and on every D15 we've played) benefited from a good set-up to adjust string height. And best set-ups are done after a week or more's acclimation to the purchasers' environment – cold, warm, humid, dry, whatever – let it sit there for a week or more. THEN do the setup… don't bother changing strings – a good setup should include new strnigs as well. Fret-sprout can show up in a six months or a year due to that acclimation – where wood expands or contracts due to temperature and humidity. Just be aware of this – in those first few years, the wood will age on its own, regardless of environment. Some show signs in 5-10-15 years of glue-separations due to that aging, and that can require filing and re-dressing frets – they probably would benefit from a full redress in that time.

For inexperienced guitarists, the "Martin Name" is a guarantee for resale, too. These other four guitars are all fine, but none have a brand or model-number that commands the same respect that "Martin D-15" does.
