Lawrence Hart on Burial’s sampling, battling the majors, and Soviet-era synths
What happens when you sign on to a label roster that contains The Arctic Monkeys, Jon Hopkins, and Hot Chip… and the drummer quits your band on the release day of the first single?
This and other pertinent questions are answered on this week’s episode. Lawrence Hart is still signed to Domino Records, but now as a solo artist whose debut album, Come In Out Of The Rain, will be released imminently.
We also discuss his background as a jazz musician, travelling all over America with various bands in his formative years, and get into one of our favourite recurring questions on the show – the one about music theory in dance music.

I’m only 15 minutes in and this has me splitting me sides! Thanks so much.
Some great chat in this one re: music theory in dance music, working with bigger labels, the minefield of sample clearance, and 90s era RnB!
Great stuff guys ❤️
Hahahaha,, Awesome Intro Scuba & the Shout Out!!! last weeks Episode was a great in depth cpnversation from 2 highly gifted professionals who absolutely love their craft and had a funny way to describe people who play music of USB Sticks….. It made me giggle, USBJAYS arent Djs Cos they Dont Play with Discs ::)) To hear that you got back lash and deepfakes is unbelievable, and to think that people spent the time and energy to actually do that is quite remarkable and in a way positive that they feel so passionately about the subject. I saw this at 4 am, and was on the floor laughing, As i could imagine the offense that has taken and how it illustrates the current headspace of a lot of people. Music is about what comes out of the Speakers not how it gets in there, Its creation and Dancing, not about getting offended and taking stances that will go out and create fake videos to try and make someone look bad, Fake News ,, HAhaha I guess its familiar,, Who are these People ::))?
