Ska Bass Riffs Are The BEST!!
Today we’re going to look at some great bass lines from a great style for bass players of ANY LEVEL.
These five bass lines are from the ‘Two Tone’ style or UK Ska revival of the late 70s early 80s. So we’re talking bands like Madness, The Specials, The Beat and Bad Manners to name just a few.
Ska bass lines are always melodic, interesting and just about the best demonstrations out there for application of chord tones and how they work in outlining a progression.
So if you’re learning a little theory or harmony and you’re wondering how arpeggios, specifically triads can help you with jamming or creating a bass line, this is the style for you.

Ska basslines are just pop punk basslines, maybe at a slight different tempo. Maybe being a little more up beat oriented.
Playing along to the original One Step Beyond is such fun!
I believe playing walking bass is the key to fully understanding the fingerboard.
hey mark these are great. would love you to break down concrete jungle by the specials.
Hi Mark, A cover/lesson of "Skin Head girl" by "Symarip" wuld be a great addition. Cheers, Mick
More 2-Tone please ????
Great lesson. Great tunes. Super fun. More ska. More punk. You rock
Mark…I purchased “groove trainer volume 1” last year. I now can’t access the course. Why?
Mark what a fantastic way to teach arpeggios/triads/chord tones. I learned One Step Beyond a while ago and right away picked out how it was built on triads. Just a perfect learning tool! I am not familiar with the other Madness song, but again, just perfect to learn and practice triads. When I write my own bass lines, the triad is always an option, though I try not to get dependent on them. 5 really good song choices by some top Ska bands. Nice job giving Ska some attention. OK, time to practice these some more. Thanks!!
PS. I love that turquoise blue background.
I can't find the tracks on the link…
Well done!
It was developed in Jamaica in the 1960s when stranger Cole, Prince Buster, Clement " Coxsone " Dadd, and Duke Reid Formed sound systems to play American rhythm and blues and then began recording their own songs.
Mark, what rig are you playing through?
I loved what I learned here, great bass lines…. however… I had to search what "SKA" even was. I love nearly every genre of music out there… this however, no thanks……
Why is the open E outside the repeating double dots in the last piece?
????
You definitely WERE on the right Beat Mark! RIP Rankin’ Roger, great band.
Thx – absolutely loved this lesson
Stand Down Margaret, another great bass line from The Beat.
Vielen Dank ????
Thanks Mark! I’m working on Mirror in the Bathroom right now (it’s a fast one!) and will tackle Hands Off She’s Mine next, with your help. The Beat (English Beat to me) are one of my all time favorites.
❤nice and very helpful tutorial sir.
Please short a lesson on how to use the open strings and adding notes down the neck. Normally done in gospel.
Thanks Mark, truly inspiring, what great fun, these lines got me back onto my bass after a lapse exploring piano
The nutty boys!
I LOVE play ska basslines – LONG LIVE SKA
I always think this genre has been forgotten. Thanks for covering this Mark ????????????????
Walking in the Sunshine – Bad Manners. Sounds great, hard to play.
Horace Panter is pretty much my only musical hero. Absolutely fantastic bassist and top bloke. The first basslines that really made me sit up and pay attention to that part of a band
