How to Hold a Guitar Pick Properly
How to hold a guitar pick for beginners, intermediate and advanced. This is the most common and most efficient way to hold a guitar pick
Yes, there are loads of famous people who did it differently but this is the most common, widely used and easiest to get good with. It’s what you could call ‘the correct way to hold a guitar pick’ or ‘the right way to hold a guitar pick’. Whilst you can do it differently, you’re usually making your life more difficult but it’s up to you
If you want to increase your picking speed on the guitar, want to shred fast guitar or just want a more consistent picking technique, then this video is for you

This is so funny after watching really fast jazz guitarists hold the plectrum all sorts of ways. Guess what? Your advice from "how to pick faster" applies here: just start, go for it.
in acoustic guitar, it makes more sound than usual, its feels weird
Guilty
Only plying about 6 months, I’ve been trying to transition to this method of holding the pick for a few weeks now. Very difficult for me to up strum!
And then I see people like Steve Morse and Marty Friedman and think "does it even matter?" ????
If you curl your index too much you can actually feel increased tension in the upper arm. The end of the index should be pointing directly down at the string, not towards or backwards.
So long story short … More surface area of your index finger helps control?
I have a random question, how do you know what kind of pick you should use? I know there's thinner ones and more solid ones. Is it just preference?
Thank you, I have been struggling with this for weeks
I feel like I'm gonna drop the pick holding it that way lol. For 3 years ive been holding it similar to the 1st way you showed, but I've recently found that is why I'm hitting my thumb on the string above the one I'm actually picking. Ugh
You look at your favorite guitar player and use that technique. Unless it is uncomfortable and you can get results in another way. The best in my opinion is to have different ways and use those as needed during different types of strokes needed. For instance one time I tried a way and it wasn't working for that part of the music and then when I needed tremolo I switched back to the other position. The more skills you have on your repertoire the better.
how to hold a guitar pick necklace? or is it just a necklace?
Are my others fingers suppose to slightly rub against the other strings or no i feel dumb????
Do you use a jazz 3 pick? Sometimes I see myself playing better when I using a thinner pick rather than a precise jazz 3
This hurts my finger. Have to move it to the first knuckle, which loses abit of controll
Till the skin starts pinching on your first finger at the nail… best to hold in flesh like his first "no" example. Just don't js ur finger to move pick but rather your wrist, golden.
I actually recently switched to just beyond the first knuckle and a little bit more of a closed fist.
What this solved from me is my paper-thin fingernail on my index finger basically getting sanded down to a sensitive and deformed state.
Same as you mentioned, except I am “just” beyond the first knuckle, instead of half-way between the knuckle and fingertip.
If anyone is suffering, especially us metal guitar players, with a damaged index fingernail try this!
So what if you hold it with three fingers like James Hetfield for example. That is how I have been playing for few years like that. I struggle to play really fast lead stuff.
Added bonus with this grip is you can do hybrid or chicken picking. More sound options and ways to play lines. The other grips won't let you do that.
I hold my pic the same way George Lynch does now rather than how I used to hold it and my playing got much better as a result. What it really comes down to is whatever works for that individual.
My Guitar tutor told me the trick to fast playing with the plectrum is to hold it so only a very small amount of pick is exposed between your thumb and forefinger that way you can play a lot faster for metal playing etc.
George Lynch uses the second method, but he's able to pick fast by using the rounded edge of the pick
As a self-taught player, it took 20 years before I discovered I hold the pick wrong. I use the thumb and middle finger. Too late to change now, as its way too ingrained in my playing to switch.
GORGEOUS BUDDY ???? ???? ???? ???? ????
Best way to hold the pick IMO is to not use the pointed part of the pick, the way they are designed to be used. Instead, try holding the pointed part straight out of your thumb (pointed part at the end of your fingernail), and use one of the more rounded edges to make contact with the strings. This just works better IMO, and it’s the only way I do it.
Do you guys also have this problem while using this grip? I sometimes scratches the string with my nail with this form. Should I curl my index more?
This is what will come naturally, beginners always hold the pick how Ben told initially, it happened with me but for few years , I have changed to what ben told latter… thanks for sharing
I hold mine with three fingers. I’ve tried the common ‘correct’ way numerous times and for me personally it’s uncomfortable and unnatural
Thank you. I was moving towards this gradually.
Just that tiny shift made such a difference
Doesn’t Mario Camarena hold his pick like this? Very similar, if not the same.
Nope. Still can't get it. Tried loads of different picks now. One of 3 thing. It either slips and rotates or hits unwanted notes/misses notes EVERY single time. Only way I can get it to stay in place is holding it the way I've always done which is what you said at the beginning. So basically I've been holding at the beginners way for 30 years.
I have horrendous trouble trying to palm mute holding it the correct way as well. Honestly, I've been doing fairly well from your complete guitar, from your alternate picking and from the hand synchronisation courses but this one fucking issue with trying to hold the pick a different way to build speed just will not come to me. Frustrating isn't the word it literally makes me want to quit.
What I find uncomfortable about this technique is that the plastic rests on my cuticle, side of nail, causing discomfort. So I have to move the pick a touch further back so it's resting against the first knuckle.
that's true. Can't believe people still teach to put the pick on the inner side of the index finger. It feels really weird and the knuckle tends to bend if pressing too hard with thumb (which may happen). On side, there's no issue and the hand is kept loose. GJ
It's definitely more comfortable but my main issue is that now the pick hits the string at an angle and produces a ton of scrape noise. Is that normal?
I started learning guitar on my own and was using the pick fine but earlier today I messed around with my pick and used this position by accident. Massive difference in comfort
Thanks alot for the tip. Im a noobie, so your video ia really helpful
This feels really uncomfortable, like im pushing against the side of my nails(?) I've seen that people usually have the pick above where you put it.
What guitar is that?
