MXR Compressor Shootout: Dyna Comp, M-102, Custom Comp, Super Comp, Studio Comp | Reverb Demo Video

It’s easy to overlook compression when building your pedalboard and fleshing out your signal chain, but we think it’s something that should be on your radar. Many of your favorite guitarists have been using different compression pedals for ages to get their signature sounds in the studio and performance settings. MXR has been designing quality compressors for decades, but which one is right for you? We compared the original Dyna Comp, the Dyna Comp Reissue, the Custom Comp, the Super Comp, and the Studio Compressor to find out.

  • I didn't really learn anything here. Which are better for what types of music? Which are best for singing lead guitar vs chicken pickin' type of playing? What's the difference between the original script model and the custom comp (other than one having an LED light) if they both use the same integrated circuit… or do they? I am left unclear whether or not the script model is identical to the original script model. This was glossed over too quickly.

  • If you played the same riff with the same settings we might learn something this video is a waste of time

  • Terrible video. Sound quality is bad. Compression settings don’t make sense. Different riffs and guitars for everything. Useless.

  • Hey man. You simply can't compare basically identical units from different decades which offer the same one function – compression, in this case – by playing different riffs or chords. This is a waste of my time, and this sucks! Others have already expressed the same negative point of view, but you seem to not bother at all. So I will not subscribe to this channel and never look in again. Duh.

  • They will all sound the same, especially onstage with the band, NOT in the bedroom!

  • Why would someone do a comparison of similar pedals while playing something different through each one?

  • What uniformed players don’t know about the original Dynacomp- you evaluate it by how it enhances the feel of playing, it’s not just about using TOO much compression, which is how you demo these.
No doubt, you use too much distortion from any pedal also of course.

  • Why don’t you know how informed guitarists use a Dynacomp?
The compression is at 3:00, the output about 9:00.
You only show settings uninformed players use.
You don’t even make the comparison equal volume.
Guitar on the internet is mostly uniformed kids who can’t be bothered with decent ability.
Even Vince or Albert don’t use more compression than 3:00 on a Dynacomp.
What are you demoing one if you don’t know this?

  • Nothing sounds better than a Script Logo Dyna Comp but if you want a more transparent compression with variable ratio then get the M76 Studio. Dyna Comp can be noisy but I think the Studio is an optical compressor so it should be much quieter.

  • Custom Comp deluxe is the same thing but has the internet knobs on the front of the pedal, so you don't need to unscrew the back panel to adjust them.
