  • I preferred the Harley Benton sound wise. I feel like the brass saddles made a difference in tone. I could be kidding myself.

  • Very good vid. Spot on. I have vintage famous guitars mainly cuz I'm old. My classic vibe Squire plays as well as my usa 1971 strat. Tone different but not lesser. Very great both. Yet big big money different. In a club with Yamaha THR10 amp never see difference
You are right today factory laser fit even on low end. Today

  • I have many budget guitars, the quality these days is amazing. Why would anyone want to spend 5,10 or even 20 times the price for a big name brand?
    Makes no sense to me,
I have owned Fender, Gibson, PRS but they are simply way overpriced, the budget instruments do the same job for way less & you can buy more of them.

  • A little suggestion for cheap and expensive. Fender owns Squier. Gibson owns Epiphone and Music Man owns Stirling By Music Man. I would stick with those cheaper versions because every cut is the same and you can replace more expensive hardware and it fits right.

I got an Epi LP Custom shop that wil blow a Gibby away. Still stock and has Grover Tuners and the bridge pick up is hot and overwound. The laminated body adds to the growl. Also have an Epi SG Custom shop with a hot bridge pickup and Grovers and that slim '61 neck profile. You don't need a whammy and just bend the neck. Both the LP and SG came with bone nuts and not plastic. The LP was a little more expensive than other Epi LPs. 100 dollars more. The SG was 350 like all the others. These two epis I will put against a Gibson any day.

But honestly buying a cheap version of a more expensive guitar I would stike to the licensing under more expensive brands.

Schecter used to be cheap, Deans used to be cheap, BC Rich used to be cheap. But everything used to be cheaper.

But if you wanna' play then try Glarry if you never have. 100 dollars and if you don't like learning to play not much lost. Plus if you can make a cheap guitar sound good and tweak the sound then a highdollar guitar you won't have no problems with.

  • What is the action on both guitars in mm at the 12th fret…VERY important as this is about playability.

  • I did guess a B being the HB – from the clean sound – there’s less treble to my ears, which I’d ascribe to the neck woods. Duller sounding. Through distortion it doesn’t matter.

If you want a decent guitar that you don’t anticipate selling, and don’t mind getting some damage through careless use, the HB makes sense.
It will have absolutely minimal resale value though.

I think a Squier Infinity range Tele a more legitimate guitar. Similar in price the HB and does have Fender lineage.
The HB is, after all, a copy of a Fender.
It’s probably fine, but I do wonder if the binding will last and just how much of a pure cosmetic feature it is.

The thing about a guitar with Fender on the headstock, is that every time you pick it up it’s an event.
The HB is just a thing for a quick strum and throw it in the back of the car.
It would be interesting to see, if I owned a GB and Fender Tele, over a decent period, which I ended up playing more.

  • Thanks for all that John – great comparison video. I’ve got an absolute ton of Telecasters but I was completely wrong with my guess on the blind test ???? – I preferred the Fender tones but thought it was the HB. As you say, it’s a golden age for guitar players of every budget. By the way, my own favourite Tele’ is my partscaster Wilko Johnson homage with all USA electronic components, Fender USA body & neck, Fender vintage bridge, Classic Gear tuners and Custom Shop Texas Special pickups – all assembled by me for less than a grand (£).
