I used a JOYO Sweet Baby for the DIRT tones.

  • Y'know, maybe hes done one, not familiar with his content, but cleans/tweed sound is where i find Solid State is really close to on par with tube amps. High gain metal tones on the otherhand is where the difference becomes very clear. There are some modelers that get really close in that respect too, but compare a Gen 1 Boss Katana on "Brown" mode to an EVH 5150iii and the difference is staggering. I mean hell, I've only sparingly used the newer Katanas, and while better than the gen 1, i dont think they compare to a 5150iii still. Although i haven't done the side by side to know for sure.

When attempting to learn how to dial tones especially, there is a certain ease with physical pedals and amp heads that DOES transition over to modelers.

But if youve never had experience with physical tube amps, you wont have the knowledge to bring over. Modelers can be clunky and a process to change the setting on which disincentivizes newbys who start out on modelers from messing around with that stuff. A lot of the time, its choose your preset and youre off to the races. Not necessarily always a bad thing. Its good to allow new guitarists to simply focus on playing, but it can also stifle creativity.

    Idk just my two cents.

  • It is completely subjective. Personally I prefer tube amps. I own vintage and modern amps and to me, there is warmth or realness I only feel from tubes. However, I love the Laney Lionheart Super60 and it’s not tube powered. It’s a different level of player interaction and response when it comes tubes. The beauty of it all is this: we want and need all of the different types of amps in the world. They offer many different paths on the journey to TONE. Find your sound and play it.

  • Tube always sounds better. It has warmer, fuller tone with better eq response. Solid states always sound a bit flat and cold.

  • Love the tube one the most, but for that more distorted type of sound, Solid state sounds a lil better

  • It's a bit silly if you're playing this from your phone speaker ???? when I first played through a tube amp I was like..
'ahhh ok I get it.. ????️????????️????'

  • Vacuum sounds the WORST to my ear, and it's been proved by scientific measurements that a low s/n ratio and many more artifacts are induced by vaccum tubes that would do unwanted distortions to the audio.
