This is as balanced of a review as I can give this amp. If you own the previous version, you don't need it. If you don't and get it, you'll enjoy it as it sounds solid. Thanks to Sky Music for the loan of this amp! Check out here using the affiliate links below.

honestly im new to guitar and im just wondering, what are these reviewers playing when they test the tones and guitars? Not sure what its called, but basically just what theyre playing. Wanna learn but not sure what to look for.
A nice video in the details, but it and other's did not really answer my questions about tone. I bought one of these recently, to replace my 4th burned out copy of a Peavey VIP-2 40 watt amp I liked. A good replacement, overall, and much like the Peavey in many respects. These demo videos rarely play any music I am likely to play (Rolling Stones, ACDC, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Cream, Rush, Black Crows–what we kids used to call "rock 'n roll"), so I tried to crank it up at the Guitar Center and rip out the intro to Brown Sugar, but a very odd rando customer forced me to curtail my testing, told me to put on headphones, as if that is a good way to test an amp. So I took it home and find that it is a good replacement for the molten Peaveys. As with the Peaveys, almost all of the tones I need can be found on the clean channel by twisting the gain knob. AC/DC clean (well Malcolm's part anyway) or Rolling Stones is about 10-10:30 o'clock on the gain, Angus is more like 12 o'clock, beyond that you can find ZZ and Zeppelin and Sabbath. As before, I have little use of the higher gain channels and special effects, with rare exceptions—how many pedals do you see Keith Richards or Malcolm Young use? The amp has a lot of bass on the clean channel, so much that I normally turn it down from noon, making it very different from my bass challenged Marshall DSL 20. All bass disappears once you go to the higher gain channels. Fine for my needs. Note that all of my guitars are equipped with humbuckers, so the strong bass on clean should be less with single coil guitars. Note that the amp is not very loud at the clean setting of 10 o'clock or less on the gain, about half as loud as the 40 amp Peavey set to play clean. So if you are playing clean, think of it as a 20 watt amp. I haven't tried using the app yet, and don't immediately feel the need to do so, but surely will get to it.

A good replacement Amp for my Fender Mustang III (since fender don't support that model anymore with software or updates).
Thank you for the advice. Us amateur players really need your input. PS. Love hearing you play !
Thanks! Very good samples and like your way of presenting. I subscribed. Oh, and this convinced me to buy the amp. Likely a big upgrade from my ancient Line6 Spider 3 75W
I just bought one two weeks ago, but I haven't had much time to do a deep dive into it yet.
Hey! Thanks for a GREAT review. I am looking to upgrade from Fender Champ 20 and it seems like this may be a good option as I am an advanced beginner. Love your channel and all that you do. Peace.
Disagree. Just played a gig with the 50 watt. Mic’d. The dance floor was packed all night. Tons of compliments on the guitar tone. It works. It can be dialed in easily to sit excellent in the mix. Better than tube amps that rely on volume
Needs more practice. hehehe????????
Just bought the 100w gen 3. It is amazing.
I just gor a Gen 3 100 watt and while it doesn't have the "magic" that my Fender Supersonic 60 tube amp has, it's adequate for small shows, church gigs, and jamming in the bedroom. Add in the effects loop and I'm extremely happy with it. It sounds great straight out of the box.
I got a MKII 50 watt a few years ago and I have no intention of giving it up. I'm just an intermediate player and all I need is a good practice amp. I'm still figuring things out when it comes to tones so this is a great teaching tool as well as a practice amp. I picked up a Fender Micro Minis Plus headphone amp and love to run it into the Katana 50 with the 3.5mm aux jack. With the Fender Tone app connected to the Micro Mini I can experiment with a crap ton of preset amps and pedals. Great fun!
I have the mk2 and absolutely love it. Only difference i see right off the back is the pushed time which is nice but could you not achieve that same tone by just using the clean variation tone and turning the gain up a lil bit? Maybe with the blues boost (the green one)
Nice little amp. I practice with it, use it for recordings and did a few outdoor parties with it. Worth the money.
I bought the gen 2 100 just before gen 3 was released so I was pretty pissed off! Having said that gen 2 is good enough and I really feel Boss are ripping people off, I bet this amp was already finished when gen 2 was released they just kept it under wraps ready for the cash grab.
The Tone Studio app Is were It is with this amp.
I've had Gen 1 for almost 6 years and it's a jewel ! Easy to dial-in without menu paralysis. I don't even bother with the Tone Studio. At home it's hard to tell it's not a valve amp. I esp love the cleans,,,,,I almost popped for a Roland JC22 or 40, but this sounds like identical circuit to me. I'm keeping this old chestnut and saving $$$ rather than going for a Gen 3. Thanks for the great review !!!
A Tele sounds thin? Out of a solid state amp?
That's odd…har har
Are those the default presets you're using, or did you tweak them
12:39 This is all I need to know. The tube feel and air movement.
Love the video….Thanks for all the info on this amp!!!
Great review, thanks
great review!
‘Gen 2 to Gen 3 feels like an incremental upgrade’ – absolute genius take. Groundbreaking. Revolutionary.
I'm one of those less is more types. My goal is to to lighten my load when traveling. My Gen 2 does that pretty well. I use it for jams, mainly. My gigs are strictly acoustic and I need 2 channels for that. Although at jams I bring a Godin hybrid guitar and I switch from acoustic to electric with one guitar and the Katana. That's a lot of fun.
I bought a katana artist head gen 3. it bricked on me at practice. Had to reset it to factory settings to get it going again. Sent it back. I will never buy another katana anything ever again!
Would love to hear how the headphone output sounds.
