8:21 Sounds damn near identical to Mike Dirnt’s bass tone on Dookie by Green Day
The EBS, Orange and Hiwatt sounded the best, clear and punchy. I can't stand when a tube bass amp is farty and soft like the sound city and the marshall. At that point you might as well go direct in
Hiwatt on all tests for me. Sounded the best. Amp 2 was a close second
Great video format thank you! I enjoyed the Hiwatt the most. The JCM 800 was a close second.
No Soldano?
Orange all the Life!!!
Todos suenan horrible en clean muchos de ellos distorsionan. debe ser el gabinete acustico que usaste, tiralo a la basura
Heart and the Orange tickle my fancy
my vote: 1) orange – clean and bright, 2) hi-watt – clean but darker, 3) marshall, other amps – too fuzzy
2:06, 2:34, 2:53, 3:13, 3:33, 3:53
4:15, 4:33, 4:52, 5:11, 5:29, 5:46
1. Not bad, but maybe too much upper mid emphasis
2. Pretty good
3. Way too nasal and farty
4. Similar to 3 but less dramatic
5. Far too mid focused
6. Favorite in blind
Bass 1 could do with a major set-up, the fret Buzz made it sound awful.unfair comparison.
I'm listening again to both the clean and dirty samples and not looking at the screen and the Hiwatt(#6) comes in best again to me for both clean and dirty, musical and well-controlled. I can see now why these were such highly prized amps back in the day. I'm thinking of going with a modern Hiwatt clone, a Reeves custom 225 or a Hi-Tone DR200. They are expensive and heavy to carry around but I'm tired of fooling around with thin bass tone from my SS amps.
i love orange ad 140 dirty
i liked #2 (marshall JCM800) and #5 (orange AD140B) the most. I record mostly punk and metal. #4 would be good for stoner/doom etc.
horrible
I reckon the reason the Hiwatt and JCM800 sounded best is down to the quality of the output transformer. You need a lot of good quality iron and copper for decent bass response, and this costs money. Usually, they're smaller and cheaper on guitar amps (compared to hi-fi amps, that is)…
How hard can it possibly be to write the name of the amp on the screen instead of "amp 1"?! Duh… This is not supposed to be a guessing test, right?…
The Hiwatt DR 201(amp #6) was my favorite.
Clean: 1 – Hiwatt, 2 – Marshall JCM 800
Dirty: 1 – Hiwatt, 2 – Sound City
1. EBS Classic T90
2. Marshall JCM 800 bass series (model 1992)
3. Sound City B120
4. Marshall JMP 1986
5. Orange AD140B
6. Hiwatt DR201
Hopefully going to be getting a JCM800 bass on the strength of these soundclips. sounds surprisingly great clean.
How loud is it compared to some of the other amps? also. what's the dimensions of it?
I used CUSTOM HIWATT 200's for bass for years, sound great with an SVT Cab
1 2 and 6 are nice for most applications but the orange wins for the metals
I thought the Hiwatt sounded really, really nice. The Orange sounded too bright (in a bad way) for my tastes. The JMP had some neat grit on the clean channel. The rest were all pretty unremarkable one way or the other.
Good comparative review . Thanks . Biggest thing I noticed is that only the newer amps ( Orange and EBS ) have any higher frequency presence. That is the ttzzztt that one might want for a funk sound. None of the sounds had a strong fundamental either . ( I know there was no equalisation applied )
I preferred the Hiwatt, myself.
In the end, I do not think the audience will care the name or brand of the bass amp.
I really liked the JMP 1986's overdrive but not its clean tone
Love the sound city, my favorite
i like how the video doesnt fucking start until 2:05 you fucking jerk
Great video! One thing has to be said about the "12 o'clock" default setting, though: Of course it's the way to go when comparing amps back to back. One possible exception would be the JCM 800's "slope" knob, which is simply a low-cut filter! AFAIK, the default ("neutral") setting is the "zero" position. Set at 12 o'clock, you already lack quite a bit of low-end, which is exactly what was originally intended in order to get a cleaner tone at high volumes.
Love the Sound City, brilliant amp!
