Yellowjacket replicates the look of the notorious touch-capacitive yellow and black keyboard of the original, enhanced it with diatonic scales and transpose, and extended it with customizable pressure control with support for expressive channel and polyphonic aftertouch. Perhaps the most exciting feature of Yellowjacket is directly inspired by EDP’s innovative pre-MIDI system that allowed multiple synths to be chained together: multi-voice modes that add adjustable “mini synths” that can provide subtle or extreme variation in tone, single-fingered chords and arpeggiated patterns, lush stereo effects, and more.
Also available: Even more exemplary sounds are on tap directly from Cherry Audio with the Hive Mind for Yellowjacket Preset Pack ($9.99, sold separately), featuring 100 more presets by sound design wizard James Dyson, designed to further showcase Yellowjacket’s advanced features through arpeggios, effects, modulation, and aftertouch. Can you run multiple instances and have like 100 wasps I mean yellowjackets running?
Capable of hyoooooj, fat sounds, but I like the sharper, quicker sounds that don't fill in every sonic crack in a mix. Awesome characterful VA, great effects, and (my pet plugin quality:) stereo imaging.
I owned the Wasp "Deluxe" (characterised by its wooden side panels and "proper" keyboard) back in the late 80s – my first synth – kicking myself for selling it. The filter on the cherry red version is beautifully recreated. Trying out the demo now and it's bringing back sweet memories ????
Just found out that Cherry Audio has a 6 vst sales deal. So bought the Wasp and 5 other vsts for a good price to keep my cherry audio collection up to date. Smart marketing. Good value. Happy to support the company.
Got it. Not only does it sound good, it does not use a lot of cpu power.
Great choice to have Tim present any synth and especially an iconic wasp recreation!
Where is the frying bacon preset? It doesn't seem to be in the preset browser
I love the filter on this thing ,you can get some squelchy goodness ????
This might be better than baby audio's ba-1…
Very cool and wonderful sound – especially the Link. One can get the variety available on the Oberheim 4-voice! I see at 7:55 that Osc 2 only can't be pitch modulated from the Control Osc, but can be MIDI-learned to mod wheel or other controller. I can't see the whole menu but is a MIDI Learn internally to the Control Oscillator possible for the sync "rips" you demonstrate there? Thank you.
Being a totally hardware guy, the idea of having a full virtual setup based on Cherry Audio Stuff is constantly on my head lately. Really tempting pieces of software.
great overview!
That is superb for a plugin….Cycle mode, genius.
Very good video Tim, thank you so much. ???? The Wasp was my first synthesizer, back in 1980. £179 from the local music shop.
Ppg 360 of the same year allready had parallel digital communication bus , much faster than serial midi.
In… about 1981-82, I met a 'swingin' couple at a party and they came over to my absent GF's Sutter St Apt in SF, CA.
They brought over their 'WASP' synth. It was a weird, plasticy thing, with a membrane KB.
I had a lot of fun playing with it – very easy to get cool sounds – real raspy and gritty, sqwaunchy, buzzes, blurps and beeps.
At the time, I was into the synth, so nothing happened…
but, today, @67, I remember her excited snake reactions to what I was doing w/ the synth,
and the skin-tight, black spandex outfit she was wearing.
Very Siouxsie Sioux looking chick in stilettos.
Things could've been different…
That's my WASP memory.
Always liked the filters of the Wasp.
I wonder if LFO goes in audio range, answer given, it does up to 100Hz
Awesome synth and you are right about the filter, wow!
Fantastic! Shared! I just bought it and I think it's amazing, I remember The Wasp well, I used to sell them! I worked at REW Pro Audio in London in 1979 and the original WASP was a very unusual product at the time. The presets sound fantastic, I will be recommending this!
Im done with them. Got lots of plugins with them.- None work on the new Mac Os on a new MacMini M4… Support fail to reply after 10 times contacting them with the issue (the plugins install but wont load)….Im out!
I own a lot of cherry audio synths and while I like them I can't tell the difference in their sound beyond the added effects and maybe sometimes the filters. I think they just keep making the same synth with new skins. Lol
Great little Synth , And the Stranglers get a mention in a Music/Synth Video Yey!;-)
Wow that filter really sounds great.
Great demonstration Tim. Incredible synth!
Take. My. Money. ❤
Wow, digital filters have come a long way. Excellent job by Cherry Audio, as always.
13:02 Oh.. NOW it is clear to me why people rave about that filter! My favourite filter still remains the filthy PS-20 filter, but this filter has a velvety nature all of its own.
HYPED
Rember already having an emulation of it from an Italian dev.
i must say, though this filter sounds great, i don't think its resonance behaves much like my doepfer wasp filter. i have never played a real wasp, but at least the doepfer module (which should be the same circuit) sounds truly out of control when the resonance is very high.
I knew the Wasp filter was something different (therefore Doepfer produces them as eurorack modules) but I never really heard them in action. I'm impressed. I wonder if this – like the Polivoks filter – is scheduled to be released as a stand-alone filter?
Had one for years – Thanks for this – sounds really good – most fun VST for a while to be honest.. Definitely got the BUZZ factor with Unison mode, Hi filter, random arpeggio and short attack..- .. The filter here is possibly better than the original 🙂
As a proud owner of an original wasp for nearly 30 years I am always very skeptical of all the emulations, wether in soft or hardware, that have surfaced so far. But I must say that this is the bomb! It does come close to the wasp quirky sound even though it doesn't seem to be as gritty and weird. I would have to try it myself to really be able to tell better. But anyway it sounds amazing regardless and does keep the philosophy of the EDP and adds tons of incredible features that prolong the wasp ethos. I am thoroughly impressed. Also congratulations on a very clear and informative review and demonstration. I want one!
my only issue is every time i change a preset i have to continue to hide keyboard doesn't seem to stay under hide if u click on hiding it…. hope they can fix this
I own a Wasp Deluxe, and have to say the filter on the CA is absolutely spot on to the hardware version!.
It's a crying shame that YouTube's enforced codec rolls all the top end off the audio. I really wanted to hear the bite and sizzle of this fantastic synth but I'm sure it sounds amazing! ????
This would fit nicely with my Microfreak as a midi controller.
Love Tim’s presentations. Personable, precise, perfect! Also, great synth????
Thanks for the demo. This a really nice sounding synth with a lot of possibilities.
Super ambassador Cherry Audio. Tim Shoebridge is the man!
