‘Forget Me Nots’ Slap Bass Riff Lesson
Lesson Material PDF available to download here: https://www.talkingbass.net/forget-nots-slap-bass-riff/
This week we’re going to be looking at the slap bass line from the song ‘Forget Me Nots’ by Patrice Rushen. The slap line is originally played by Freddie Washington.
You may have already seen my breakdown of the riff from the Top 5 Must Know Slap Riffs video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eeCKX3d9-U
I recently saw a video of Freddie Washington playing the riff in a rehearsal clip and noticed how he actually slaps every note of the fast little licks in there. So in this lesson I’m going to give you a ‘reboot’ of my breakdown showing this trickier version along with some tips on nailing those quick thumb slaps.
The video of Freddie playing the line can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5QYSu9xaTE

Great job going slow and putting pieces together like puzzle.
I enjoyed this section. I would like you to do the rest of the song.
Hi. I have a question : was the PB of Freddie Washington equipped with flat strings or round wound?
THANK YOU.
Sounds too thin
What is the name of the bass guitar?
Where has this guy BEEN all my life????????????????
If you have a five knuckle shuffle before playing this , it makes the riff go smoother.
You make it so easy ! Thank you so much !
Would a compressor help with the really fast succession of slaps?
Thank you so much.
Can you make a video playing "Forget Me Nots" as you just did here followed by "Men in Black" in F(natural) without re-tuning the bass? Then play the bridge to George Michael's "Fast Love"(way up high in A) as a comparison? All the same bass part but in different keys. Thanks 🙂
Here's a video of the man himself playing. Is he using hammer-ons? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFRrkzlHXvc
Awesome job!!!!! Thanks for breaking that down.
Why not to play the third note in the riff A as 0 on string 5 instead of 5 on string 6? isn't easier to play?
Please tell me what Bass Guitar model is that. I need that axe in my life!
What about double thumbing? I can't seem to bounce that fast.
thnks alo man you are amazing
I had an Ibanez bass almost the same as that model. I traded it in for a Sterling Music Man bass. Would I have another of those Ibanez basses? Absolutely!
1:35 That's what she said 🙁
great lesson really helped
Thank´s so much!
Che basso spaziale! ????
You explain this lick so well great bass teacher thanks????????????????????
You are a very good teacher and my lovely brother..
Give me your bass the sound is amazing
❤️❤️❤️????
????????????????????
It should not be 3 hammer-ons, but actual 6 quick thumbs. Here's how it's done -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWiTwYBPInQ
can't believe this only has 760 likes!!!!!
This is a great bsssline and it’s not even that hard
Of all the instructors on YT, yours was the easiest to follow and understand (I've only been playing fore 1 week). I love how you break it down into bite size pieces. Thank you. Triple
top tutorial ta
Brilliant instructions ????????
Thank you great video!!
It's good but there's so much more to this line from the bridge including some amazing fills.
I admit I had to practice this song a lot, before it sounded any good.
what do i need to get dat funky sound? i own a fender p bass guitar.. im not happy with my bass tone 🙁
Nailed it… the f# g# bit.. tough but cool
3:11 when you realize you've been doing it wrong the whole time ???? I always thought the hammer on E to F# was popped now I can hear the difference in tone and groove with it all being slapped! Sounds much better.
What about the triple hammer at 1:49 in the song? I havent seen anyone show that technique
8:23 gotta take note on that
love that p bass tone
You're the Best Teacher! thank very much!
Thanks you are the best teacher in the world for bass
my slapping technique is similar to yours but i see other people playing it with a different style which makes it looks so easy. it's like as if they don't event spend half the effort we do while playing it; their wrist almost doesn't move. i wish i could play it their way. our style puts unneccessary stress on the wrist.
What kind of pick ups are there in your bass? This is a really good demo. I wish more people would take the time that you have in this video.
First class lesson – I've always wanted to play this bass line and now I can thanks to your guidance. Thanks – top man!
