Prelude #1 For Bass Guitar (J.S.Bach) – Improve Your Technique (and everything else!)

This week we’re taking a look at the Prelude in C from the Well Tempered Clavier by J.S.Bach. This piece is fantastic for developing many aspects of bass technique – especially position shifting! We’ll be working through the first section of the piece and breaking down all the technical hurdles as well as the harmony.

The Prelude In C Study Piece Coaching Course is now available over at the Talkingbass website:

  • I learned this by ear in the 80s from Stu Hamm's version. At the time I did not know that Stu uses a LOT of hammer-ons, which might have helped at the time.

  • Why not make some music along the way? The right notes in the correct order, at a steady tempo constitutes only a melody. It doesn't actually become 'music' until the individual notes lose their independent consequence in course of a lyrical exposition. Even famous classical 'melodies' must receive this treatment or fail in music.

Of course, if its your 'intended' goal to impress with 'technique', you're not a musician yet anyway, just an 'instrumentalist'; albeit a capable one, whose consequence is derived from the admiration of hobbyist/amateur's audible recognition that you have, machinelike, defeated the mechs of technique.

  • My bass has only 18 frets and frets 15-18 are not easily reachable. So I drop measures 10-16 down an octave with the bass note in measures 10 to F#. Works well enough though the bass line has a different flavor to it.

  • I know obviously the lesson is meant for 4 string, but is it also set up for 5 string bass as well, or would I need to make my own adjustments.

  • That is incredible, I really loved your ‘classical bass rendition.’ I’d love to know how long did it take you to get this down pat? Luv to hear your Ravel’s Bolero!

  • Great lesson Mark. What do you think about using 2nd and 3rd fingers instead of barring and rolling the G to the C on the 10th frets. I can do it both ways, it’s just a position I’m more used to playing and can do it smoother.

  • Once we master this course we can then start practicing playing it without looking at the fretboard.
