Transition from 6 to 7 STRING GUITAR: 3 Tips

Do you want to know the easiest way to transition from playing a 6 string guitar to a 7 string guitar? Do you already have a 7 string guitar but still struggling to play it?

You’re going to get 3 TIPS to help you with this transition from 6 to 7 string guitar (I’m assuming you play metal!!)

I’ll admit, this was a tough thing for me. In fact, I almost gave up and sent my 7 string back! I’m glad I didn’t.

So I’m going to share my pain points with you, and how I got over them!

These 3 tips may be hard to digest because I know as soon as you get your hands on that 7 string, you’re gonna wanna go for that heavy B string!

I’m going to ask you to refrain!! Actually, I don’t want you touching that B string at least for a week!

But why???? I wanna play heavier stuff!!!

Trust me on this…the goal is to not only play 7 string metal, but to also stay competent in play all the other strings!

Tip 1 – Don’t touch the B string yet (for about a week). Play your normal metal riffs on the other strings that you’re used to playing on

Tip 2 – Play full chords (like you’re playing acoustic)

Tip 3 – Gradually integrate that B string

Doing it this way will help you become accustomed to play your new 7 string guitar without losing your 6 string skills.

Let me know if this video helped you, and what was your greatest challenge when transitioning from a 6 string to 7 string guitar? Leave that in the comments below!

Oh, and SHARE this video with the metal world!!

Keep it Metal,
Jason

  • Jason I purchased a cheap Jackson 7 string for $250 and I absolutely love this thing. I have other more expensive 6 strings but this is my go to guitar now .

  • I bought my 7-String for ONE reason…. I want you to tune that 7th string down to an A, and then strum…. Oh yeah, that's the real stuff!

  • i just bought my first 7 string and its getting upgraded pickups, bridge and pots installed currently… i should have it by mid next week. I'm hella excited! however, I'm not a metal player… i play in a beatdown hardcore band. i was wondering, is it hard to take stuff from drop b and c# tunings and play it on the 7 string? cause its normally tuning is drop a, if I'm not mistaken?

  • Thank you for this great tips! I've had my first 7 string guitar for about a week now and I have been playing the B string more than any other strings lol I will start practicing full chords and songs that are for 6 string.
I got an Ibanez 7 string and because it's designed so nice, it was so easy to play since the day I first played it. But I do sometimes get confused when I play a power chord on the A string.

  • Soooo buy a 7 string and only play 6 of them…lmao jkjk to each their own. we all get into 7s in order to play things lower so the best advice I was ever given for writing especially was to act like the high e string was the new string and just play the guitar like you would a 6 string because chances are you won't be using the high e near as much as your low b

  • Im about 5 years late. But have been playing on 6 string for about 8 years now. Got a 7 string on the way. Should arrive tomorrow afternoon. Can't wait. Been wanting one for a couple years now, just didnt feel ready. Good thing I enjoy a challenge.

  • I am surprised you didnt mention muting. The toughest challenge is playing clean without string noise. The right hand muting position used for the 6 string goes out the window.

  • I’m finally picking out a 7 string after playing since 94’. I’ve always bought guitars second hand. Trying to decide on whether or not to order a new 7 on Sweetwater or sift through the used gear. When I go used, it frees up a few dollars for another Pedal, different strings and a good strap. Great video dude ???????? I’ll learn from your headaches.

  • Imagine video about transitioning from a 6 string to a 8 string guitar.

"Don't touch that B and F# string or you will be sorry, because my fists are F-# " ????

  • I usually play in drop tunings so I look at it as having a extra high string lol

  • Thank goodness ultimate guitar tabs has plenty of 7 string songs and chord voicing figured out – you are one of a VERY few content creators that made 7 string videos and I will be taking some of your tips into consideration. I'm 2 weeks out from receiving my 7 string and coming from 20 years of 6 string guitar playing I'm kind of freaking out regarding the transition. I mainly do live looping so I am hoping to really take advantage of the extended range to thicken up my mixes! Thanks for the tips

  • I have learned so much from Jason’s videos. He’s awesome. However, I keep hearing Macho Man Randy Savage giving me the lessons. ???????????? This is not a bad thing. ????

  • I picked up a jackson slattxmg3 soloist 7 string about a year ago and it's been pretty much collecting dust…EXACTLY for the problems you mentioned in this video ironically!!! I'm going to try your advice and get used to playing this thing if it kills me. I started playing 70s and 80s hard rock/metal around 1985 on a 6 string. Later in my life I transitioned from 22 fret guitars to 24. It doesn't sound like much but the extra 2 frets and longer scale length really throws off your game for a while due to muscle memory!!! Lol (I'm sure I'm not the only one).
BUT now I have this beast of a guitar and was ready to dive into some slipknot, korn, soad, and other downtuned metal greats without having to deal with spaghetti strings…it was a lot more complicated than I thought it would be! Thank you for the tips!!!

  • It’s funny I felt the same way as you about the extra string. And I thought about taking it off just to practice without it too. Then add it later. I’m a drummer, been for 25 yrs but Iv always wanted to play guitar because I can write riffs in my head but can’t play them so Iv decided to learn. Why did I choose a seven. We’ll… all my favorite bands play a seven like Unearth or After the Burial. Anyways thanks for the video. It gives me some clarity and let’s me know I’m not alone on the subject. I’ll keep fucking around and hopefully I can one day write that platinum album. Thanks????

  • After having played 7 string for a long time, i've really wanted to share this trick i've learned to make 7 string guitars a lot easier to play.

There are some 7 string players that tune the G string down a half step from whatever they're tuning too. In my case, i tune to Bb Standard, so i'd tune my G String down to F. This alows you to play all of your strings from the low B to the high B just like a 6 string, but with a high e for added range.

  • I'm watching these videos because I have a 5 string Bass and it's a struggle to find good bass videos about it. I'll definitely do what you said here. Now I'm thinking about getting a 7 string guitar to go with it.

  • In my opinion, it's best to start off with a 7 string, and learn the ins, and outs of it, if you plan on seriously playing a seven string. The theory behind that, is you won't be an old dog, trying to learn new tricks. This is not to pile on with the dad jokes guy…after all, Mr. Stallworth is in his mid-20s

  • About get my first 7 string. My favourite genres are black metal, doom and thrash. I mainly wanted one for more interesting chords voicings, not necessarily to just play djenty 0-1-0 stuff. Got any band recommendations for 7 string black, doom or thrash?

  • Just learning 7 string, the hardest part is keeping my "base string" on the low E and not resting the the B string has been a pain being most songs are done on a 6 trying to avoid hitting that B is a bastard.

  • i learned by taping the string to the guitar neck …if i hit it it didnt sound but i felt it….
i learned just because i could i didnt need it!! today i bag on it for flavor in the sounds….i personally think metal music sucks but i am one person….

  • I've been looking at 7 strings again recently. I owned one briefly a few years ago, but it was cheap an the neck pocket was cut crooked, so I returned it. Coming back to it, I'm now trying to decide if I want to try another 7 string, or just go straight to an 8 string. I suppose time will tell.

  • Played bass for a seven string band fee years ago. Just got my own and first seven two days ago. And everything u suggested is spot on. Ive been focusing on getting used to the spacing of the higher strings. I can noodle the strings well but chords get messy and i have to really focus and watch my hands. In time it will come together. Not gunna lie i have been hanging out on string seven enjoying the death and destruction those tones provide lmao! Great stuff
