Vince Gill Gives Us “One More Last Chance”

Get out the Kleenex, hankies, or whatever you use to wipe away your tears: It’s the last episode of this season of Shred With Shifty, a media event more consequential and profound than the finales of White Lotus and Severance combined. But there’ll be some tears of joy, too, because on this episode, Chris Shiflett talks with one of country music’s greatest players: Vince Gill.

Gill’s illustrious solo career speaks for itself, and he’s played with everyone from Reba McEntire and Patty Loveless to Ricky Skaggs and Dolly Parton. He even stepped into the Eagles after Glenn Frey’s death in 2017. His singing prowess is matched by his grace and precision on the fretboard, skills which are on display on the melodic solo for “One More Last Chance.” He used the same blackguard 1953 Fender Telecaster that you see in this interview to record the lead, although he might not play the solo the exact way he did back in 1992.

Tune in to learn how Gill dialed his clean tone with a tip from Roy Nichols, why he loves early blackguard Telecasters and doesn’t love shredders, and why you never want to be the best player during a studio session.

  • Vince Gill is a musicians musician. Incredible player….I prefer him solo way more than anything in the Eagles.

  • Thank you so much for this episode! I grew up the the 80's/90's loving Country music and Vince Gill was at the top of my list of favorites and this is my favorite solo of his.

  • Vince is awesome. I like everything he's ever done, and as far as I know, has never had a bad word said about him.
He's spot on with his assertion that guitars can be the same but different. I'm not a player by any stretch of the imagination, but I have 2 Strats and I can feel and hear a big difference with each one. I can go to a music store and pull down new Strats off the wall and not find two that feel the same.

  • I can't guarantee it without removing the neck, but I'll bet dollars to donuts, the neck on that Tele Vince loves so much, was fashioned by a neck fashioner at Fender guitars back in the 50s by the name of Tadeo Gomez.
I know this because I own one. I've had several guitar aficionados, debate on whether it's a Broadcaster or a Nocaster.
I'll tell you this the neck on it feels just the way Vince describes it. It just fits in your hand like no other neck I've ever wrapped my hand around. Magic!

  • Extremely grateful for the access we have these days to hearing the personal side of the greatest musicians of all time! ???????? can’t imagine any other point in time where one feels like they’re sitting in the room like a fly on the wall amongst these giants.

  • Vince is a true legend. Got to work with him during my days with EMG. He’s the real deal, standing outside his tour bus to make sure the last autograph and picture is taken all with a smile and charm. I hadn’t seen him in years and ran into him and he acted like he just saw me yesterday. Great golfer too.

  • When Vince talked about slow songs, it reminded me immediately of his solo on Pretty Little Adriana. One of my favorites.

  • I considered the solo to Oklahoma Borderline first time I saw Vince play it….. ripping lol

  • Looks like Shifty is playing an American Original Series 60’s Telecaster Custom in Lake Placid Blue. Or could be a custom shop in NOS but I’ll bet it’s the former.

  • I was lucky enough to record Vince once on a song for Amy! He did a solo on the end of her song. He did about 13 different takes and each one was flawless and a completely unique and a great idea!

I looked over at my friend who was producing and said good luck picking which solo.

Amazing player and tons of great stories!

  • One of my favorite Vince guitar solos is a live recording with Gregg Allman and Zack Brown, Midnight Rider. The look on Zack’s face when Vince starts soloing, is priceless. The video is on YouTube. He’s playing a beautiful 335. Incredible sense of melody. Great interview. Thanks so much.

  • What a great hang this was Chris, thanks! Love Vince and am looking forward to seeing him with the legendary Tom Bukovac in the band in Charleston in early June. Also, saw Vince with The Eagles in January at the Sphere. Really good show in an amazing venue.

  • I've played guitar in bands for 50 years. For the past 10 years I've played quite a bit of Country music. I started on RnR & Blues then I heard Albert Lee,J. Burton. Ray Flacke, Pete Anderson (a lot of "Telemasters"). I even play a little bit of "Jazz" guitar (in my fashion). Nothing is harder for me than learning Vince Gills' solos. Try "Little Liza Jane" MY GOD ! or "Oklahoma Borderline" Sweet Jesus ! He goes on and on ! It's truly amazing to me.

  • It's what he's playing but even more so HOW he's playing it. Such a great touch. One of the greats for sure!!

  • I thought it was interesting hearing Vince say his voice was key and let people discover his guitar playing over time. Also that most people are drawn to a great singer singing a great song. The one thing I wish I had more time for is song writing.

  • The student never should have his guitar turned up louder than the master.

  • I went to a Vince Grant Gill show in Cleveland in the 90’s, and never knew what a monster guitar player he was. He played center stage with 2 Rivera Combos behind him for just about 2 hours straight. I went for the voice , and left with huge respect for him as an axe man.

  • One of my favorite way back when solos is on "I'm Almost Ready" – Pure Prairie League days. I ruined that record learning that solo.

  • Regarding In Ear Monitors and guitar tone, I found the same thing until I got a good set with 5 drivers and it made a whole world of difference

  • Vince said he cant shred or rip a solo, lets not forget his solo on Midnight Rider live at the Allman Brothers Tribute from a few years back. One of the best solos I have heard

  • Don't worry about your voice, Vince..David Crosby still had his right up to the end! You will too❤❤

  • I wonder if Vince has ever played around on some Nacho Telecasters. Best Teles I’ve ever had under my fingers…too bad I can’t afford one ????

  • Favorite Vince story I heard him tell was he was playing a show with Chet Atkins . He said he told Chet he didn't know the lead for the next song and Chet said : Try playing the melody that's what i do .
