The CAGED System Explained For Guitar
I felt the need to try to explain the CAGED system again in as much clarity as possible.
There’s a bunch of people out there confusing the shit out of this concept and it just shouldn’t be that way.
It is an extremely useful way to open up the fingerboard and it is absolutely the fundamentals of the guitar. Period. End of story.

The flaw in the CAGED system is naming the shaped after their open chord counterparts. The shapes should simply just be called "Shape 1, Shape 2" and so on and so forth. This would have saved an entire generation of guitar players so much confusion.
Way too much playing and not enough clear instruction. I have no better idea of what the caged system is now than I did before this video.
The 'oh shit' parts were when he went jazzy.

I've been playing guitar since the mid-80s and have always thought CAGED was unnecessary. But it's a real eye-opener, all the gaps are slowly filling up now. Thank you for recommending this so strongly in your videos ????
Hey Guthrie. This is super helpful, I have a hard time remembering how to start transitioning the caged system / triads to minor. I forget which fret to move up or down. Do you have any tricks or mental maps to remembering those?
A great musical way of practicing CAGED is with the song Hey Joe. It has all the chords. ( C G D A E ) Start with C in C shape and stay as close as possible on the neck playing the other chords. Then move to C in A shape and do the same. It’s cool if you also play that little lick in E at the end, every time in a different position. A really fun way to practice this.

Ive been doing this all my life but never really thought of it as caged just chord shapes and inversions is the way I thought of it
