One of my most popular Youtube videos is the one where I teach “The Beast,” the most advanced scale exercise in my arsenal. I’ve had a lot of people ask about adapting it to 5-string basses, and now after years of telling people to figure it out themselves, I’m finally going to help you out a bit. 🙂

The key point in this lesson is this: If you understand the structure of an exercise, the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind it, then not only can you better master the exercise, but you’ll get a lot more out of it. And you have the potential to create other similar exercises for yourself based on the structure that you’ve internalized.

This point is so important to me as a teacher that I will continue to not put out written versions of this exercise for 5- or 6-string basses. If you’re advanced enough to be doing this exercise, then I officially assign you to understand the structure, not just learn the movements by rote. Anything else is doing yourself a disservice.

Have fun!

  • Hi. I’m just seeing this: June 2024. If you haven’t already done it, I’d like the 5-string book on the beast scale, and these other practice scales. I haven’t heard of this method before. Thanks.

  • I have a Fender 5 String Electric Bass I bought from Guitar center when I was in 5th Grade. The 5 string Bass makes reading Band charts easier.

  • Hello here ! I am a new suscriber. I'm mostly a drummer ( because I love bass more than bass player themselves 😉 I have an old Ibanez that need so much repairs I am about to buy a new one. My level is way under my drum level.. And I would like to concentrate on slap technique.. I found a bass that I like that is priced the same in 4 or 5 strings… Which one would you advise me to go for ? I am afraid slap will be harder on 5 than 4 .. But in my old days I used to play neo metal music and I'm afraid I'll miss the B string :'( please help..

  • Hey Josh, thanks for the great videos. I am on a 5-string and have been doing the beast but want to step back and do the 2 octave boxes – I feel like I am getting better at memorizing where the notes are but not understanding how to apply what I’m learning to actually playing. On a 5 string there isn’t really any shifting from the lowest C. Should I just play from the E (as if on a 4 string) to practice the boxes? Thanks again for all your great videos

  • Hey! I'm sorry if this isn't the right forum for this subject but since the comments on your other channel are turned off I didn't know where else to turn! )):

I saw the video "socialism: the golden trap", and was just wondering if your view on communism is the same, all though it wants to get rid of the state etc etc?
Again, I'm not craving an answer since I guess you turned off the comments for a reason, lots of strong emotion connected to this topic.

Anyways, keep up the good work, love the bass videos and the raw food channel haha. I'm from Sweden so finding good fruit and vegetables (that isn't only apples and beets) makes it hard to be completely raw (but of course vegan for the animals!).

  • Hey man! Awesome lesson. I have a lesson for the beast as well on my channel, I really like how you approached the lesson with the pdf and all. Really great stuff.

  • I've never really thought about focusing on the root note like that. I just try not to mess up the exercise. Anyway, I've been slacking on this. I've gotta start practicing more.
