The best fuzz face flavor is a Rat imo
Jimi definetely used a Fuzz Face distortion pedal theoughout his career. He also used other pedals. It's likely that he used a Guild distortion pedal on much of Electric Ladyland which Mike Matthews was making pedals for at that time. They came out with a pedal that was very similar to the Big Muff, even in appearance, which would come out a year later. However, you have to keep in mind that whatever pedal Jimi used, most of them, his tech would constanly be modifying. They would take them on tour, specifically for the casing (as casings were not easily found back then), and modify them constantly. So much effort was given to refining Jimi's sound as the sound of rock guitar was changing itself. Jimi was definetely the quintessential force for that.
There are a handful of strategies for setting a Hendrix tone with a FF and Marshall, but this is probably the best, especially if you’re new to using to FF’s or you’re using a lower wattage amp than he did. Great video!
You’re the man Mikel

The volume pot on the guitar is by far the best way to control a fuzz face, from clean to heavy sounds.
Can a boss power stack st-2 sound good with a fuzz face to get the Hendrix tone?
I appreciate you sharing the Fuzz settings and guitar volume settings my man, way to dial it in????????
Actually to get a closer sound your Fuzz Face needs to be an old germanium kind, and your bridge pick up needs to be reversed, too.
This video is based on a transistor that Jimi never used…
Parâmeters , not paramêters
unity when the guitar volume is on 10?
Underrated channel. Thanks!
Awesome video. ????
Are your amp settings in this video 868880 ?
When setting the unity gain what was the guitar volume at?
Sounds great!
Depends on the fuzz face. Mine isn’t hitting unity gain until pretty high on the volume dial and with the fuzz turned up 95%. My resistors are biased to the appropriate voltages. I’ve even tried different bias setting. It just sounds best at around 1.5v and 4.5v on q1 and q2.
Which ac128 fuzz do you own?
The first myth may have been confusing a Octavio I set it with no fuzz and volume cranked.with a fuzz face before… thanks for the info ????
Wonderful!! I've learned a lot!!
yeah – fantastic guideline how to achieve a geat JH style FUZZ tone !!
0:00 what’s the song here? just improv?
Those small blue fuzz faces are not as good as the large blue silicon ones. The larger one has the proper electronic components and not the micro ones that are in the small pedal. The big one has a lot better dynamic range and a clarity that the small ones don't. I set my Marshall so that it is just starting to break up, I have my fuzz face volume just a tiny bit higher than unity, and then I put the fuzz to maximum, but then dial it back just a little bit, till it loses the fizziness, but retains a nice fuzz. I then control it with my guitar volume. With this set up I can go from a really nice sparkling clean to, to a really nice full on fuzz, and everything in between. Also, the big one is battery powered and when the battery is a bit less than 9v, it adds just a little bit of grit too, which I think is part of Jimi's tone.
Good video I’m going to have a play with this ????
Trying out your setting. Pretty much on the money.
Hi got a question to ask, when is the fuzz face switched on during voodoo child ? is it always switched on ? I have a blues jr and a fender strat with Texas special pick ups
Legit knowledge. Wish people knew more about unity gain!
Excellent video, great tone. Would you know by adjusting the trim pot inside the pedal, what is the bias voltage set on the Hendrix mini ffm3? Thanks.
Always 11
I use crazy fuzz ,eqd. ???? pedal pawn fuzz
I came to the same conclusions. Interestingly it seems he’d solo at 9 instead of 10 sometimes to not get too muzzy? That’s how I managed it anyway.
Great video
Super !
I bought the band of Gypsies fuzz face and it’s the best fuzz I’ve played. I’ve spent years trying to find “that sound” and to my ears the band of Gypsies fuzz to me at least is the perfect fuzz sound and I’ve tried dozens of boutique fuzz pedals on the market.
I never liked how most fuzz pedals were always balls to the walls. I've always preferred a slightly fuzzy sound instead. I was glad to finally see somebody turn the fuzz control knob to different settings !
