Jim Root on 25 Years Since Slipknot’s Debut, Taking Off the Masks for a Show, Authentic Tones
As one-half of Slipknot’s twin guitar towers, Jim Root has been a driving force behind the band’s crushing riffs and evolving sound for over two decades. As Slipknot came through London to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their landmark debut album, #4 himself sat down with Guitar Interactive’s Jonathan Graham to discuss revisiting early songs, chasing authentic tones on tour, vintage guitar obsession, potentially taking off the masks, and why the work never really ends.

Slipknot revisiting the first album and with the addition of Eloy, holy cow we might get a third Iowa era Slipknot album. ????
Never heard a more beautiful laughter ❤️????.
Them playing without masks is probably like an NBA player hooping with his teams jersey on. They’ll always perform well but the energy is different once they put their number on.
To stay hydrated you should take a sip of water every time Jim says ‘you know’. Jim’s the best.
looks like dave grohls older brother
Its always a shame when musicians are so into gear and sound quality then you see them live and all you can hear is kick drum and sub frequency.
I saw Tremonti 2 times- he is a serious amp/gear guy- and honestly he might as well have been playing through a micro cube. No guitars in the mix, all drums and sub. Real shame.
Can't believe jim wouldn't of even been in slipknot if he decided to stay with the band he was already in. Thank god his former band mate told him he would be crazy not to fly to California and play guitar on slipknots first album.
Slipknot sucks. It's kinda hard to be a badass metal band when the singer is crying like a dog in every interview he ever does. Pathetic. You need 9 dudes to make that garbage? Sounds like y'all are OOZING talent ????????????????????
Corey and Clown are running Slipknot not as a band but as a firm. They are not musicians but CEOs. I will never forgive them for what they did to Joey and for letting their bandmate down like that. After Joey, I stopped listening them out of mu respect to Joey. I don’t believe that people who are able to fire their bandmates like that, just because they were worried about the cash flow, would be able to do genuine music. Rest im peace Joey. Your genius lives in your masterpiece.
The band died with Joey and Paul.
Jim Root will always be one of my favorites
he plays guitar for greenday
Metabolic or My Plague. Both awesome.
Jim Root has turned into Alan Moore
A guitar player i really like his interviews that one time he talks about metallica and his dad getting him a guitar and he starts to cry man so relatable, man we came up in the best of times
Hell yeah thanks for the shout Jim! you're the best
I am interested in how Jim has not lost all his hearing not using IEMs. I love the ones I use – I got away from the floor wedges as soon as I could
Thanks for the time stamps
i love hearing Jim talk about the technical aspects of jamming, his understanding of everything just goes to show how talented he is and has been over the years
Great interview.
Hopefully one day I could sit and talk with him.
He’s got so many good stories. And the energy is always relaxing.
Great man. So Down to Earth.
I met him at a Meet and Greet for Knotfest 2014. It was a once of a lifetime thing to meet Corey, Him, Shawn, and Chris was there.
They were hiding V Man and Jay.
Great Times!!
Jimbo! Fuckin can't wait to see em again, whenever that'll be. RIP Joe man, fyi his family raised money to release one of his band Vimic unreleased album. Should be killer
I'm gonna be honest one song I'd love to see on the setlist again is Three Nil. Was a great song on the album and live it was great too!
I’m a complicated man. I see a slipknot video and I leave this comment and leave.
Slipknot died when Joey got fucked over by Corey and clown.
been waiting for a full interview since prism supply. the best m/
I think this is the first time I’ve heard Jim talk in detail about how he joined Slipknot. I can only imagine how nervous he must’ve been — stepping in as the new guy, having to learn all those songs in such a short time, and then recording them for posterity. That album ended up becoming legendary.
