Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

In this episode we delve into world of the not-so humble treble booster. If you’re already a fan, you’ll know that they’re somewhat unfortunately named because to most of us, well, boosting treble isn’t exactly a priority with the majority of modern amps.
However, just as ‘Global Warming’ should actually have been called ‘Crap Weather And Periodic Regional Devastation’, so the dear treble booster might have been better named, ‘Make Your Pushed Amp Or Overdrive Pedal Sound Properly Bloomin’ Rock’N’Roll’. Hmmmm. Might not have fitted on the screen print.
Nevertheless, whatever they’re called, they’re still largely misunderstood so here we do our best to offer some insight into how you may benefit from using one. Anybody who’s struggling along the road to getting just the right kind of ‘more’ from their already overdriven amp, listen up – this video’s streets are paved in golden knowledge and inspiration for you. Maybe.
It’s pretty nice with a Strat into a Plexi too. Mmmmm.

Please enjoy the video…

  • Until I upgrade my rig someday, I am firmly in Budgetland. Pricey pedals just make no sense given what I play. So I got the budget treble booster, the Salem Boost. It's not as powerful, sound-wise as the classic ones, but it does the job. I don't think it's Germanium, however, I would recommend it to people just wanting to try out the sound. It's made by Gokko.

  • I have 2 Java Boosts…..One I've had for years, and I just decided I'd like a second one if one goes out. Both are blue and the one I've had for years doesn't have the coffee cup the recent acquisition does. Both have the black OC 44 transistor, the one without the coffee cup has more gain. I haven't messed with the internal trim pots. Both sound great….

  • What I don't understand, does a gemanium treble booster have to go at the front of a gain chain on a pedal board similar to a fuzz pedal because of the similar impedence problems that fuzz's have, or will it function at the back end of a gain chain, or even after a chorus pedal, etc. ?? The original Range Master sat on the amp, implying it was at the end of the chain. Is that then the only way it will function, as stand alone with no other effects? I own a Les Paul and a Marshall clone, damn there is not a combination of the fuzz and Beano Boost combination that does not sound fabulous. Really really outstanding!

  • To me the most versatile trouble booster I've ever seen isn't even in the group of pedals that they have it's the full tone ranger because it has a six position switch I don't think any of these can outperform that one and it's not even represented so you're really not getting a full picture with the selection considering that the full tone ranger exists

  • Treble Booster into a cranked amp is one of my all-time favorite sounds. Guys like Rory Gallagher, Brian May, Tony Iommi, Marc Bolan, and Billy Gibbons used treble boosters to get their signature tones.

  • Toe Blisters? damn an I thought ya were demo'ing Treble Boosters? Could'a been an epic compare demo vid, but, ya missed the mark Homies!

  • I had such a hard time with pedals like this. The sounds were awful to me UNTIL I played with a full band mix. They just push everything to the front really well.

  • First pedal on my board is an Effectrode PC-2A Tube Compressor. Should I place my AnalogMan Beano boost after it or before it? Isn't there a risk to overdrive or damage the Comp lamp if the boost is placed before? Thanks

  • It's really important to remember that these were made with a lot of live music in mind in a band context for older, darker amps to excite the high end (to stand out in the mix). I really wish this was a demo that would include the pedal on and off in a band context. Of course a treble booster might not sound great by itself in all cases.

The same reason we tend to prefer darker/scooped when playing alone (because it sounds bigger, thicker by itself), which is also the reason why that same sound gets lost in a mix.

  • Any idea about active pickups used with treble boosters? I do not like the sound of my rangemaster clone with fishman fluence classics.

  • You cannot make a vídeo on boosters without the Dallas range master original.

  • We watch to watch and learn about the pedals. Why do we have to put up with even 10 seconds of fret wanking? Get on with it you saddo’s. We can all do what you do. Pedal show…. remember?
