  • Hola amigo.
Hay algo que no entiendo, ¿ si tenemos al principio d la pedalera el Opus–Simulador d Amplis? , ¿porque pones al final otro Ampli con altavoces,? Y es el que va conectado Linea .
    Un saludo, Gracias.

  • At the 2:00 minute mark in the video, there is a sweep across a picture of the back of a 4-loop rackmount switcher with each loop having 'In, Send, Return, and Out' jacks. Can anyone identify that device for me by make/model? Thanks. I am google image searching on terms like CAE, Rane, Rocktron and loop switcher and I am having trouble identifying it.

  • Too many pedals putting together kills the dynamic of guitar tone, and add lot of noise to the sound.
The ground reason of these complicated rack systems was to sound MODERN. At the end Dann Huff is playing now with very simple rig with no chorus. ( He had poisoned with chorus in te 80 s ????)

  • For considerably less money you could create those sounds (and much more and with more routing flexibility) with a Fractal Audio FM9 which includes all the same modelled effects shown in the Steve Lukather rig diagram (Mark iic+ head, VCA compressor, Parametric EQ, Songbird Tri-stereo and Roland Dimension D chorus, Dual-De-tune, Digital reverb and delay, Mesa, and many other, speaker cabs… and more than 50 overdrive pedal models). I realize this takes a lot of the "fun" out of acquiring all of this analog gear but its considerably more practical and versatile.

  • You might do the continuation of this video for 2025. Just an MXR Rockman straight into the interface 🙂

  • I have a very old copy of a book named The Complete Guitarist by Richard Chapman which has a similar setup like this, but the path is like follow:
Guitar to Amps (multiple different amps mixed to one channel to feed effects with speaker sim)
    Amps to comp and eq
Comp and eq out in stereo to two reverbs
Reverb 1 left out to mixer channel 1 left in, reverb 1 right to detune
Reverb 2 right out to mixer channel 1 right in, reverb 2 left to delay
Detune to mixer channel 2 in stereo
Delay to mixer channel 3 in stereo
    Mixer to chorus in stereo
Chorus to power amp in stereo
Power amp feed 4 4×12 cabs in stereo

It's interesting how there can be multiple different ways to achieve a good sound. I used the above setup to build a pedalboard. Sounds amazing!

  • Thank you R.J. for this video tutorial which is full of useful and interesting information on the subject! You're the man and I love the geekiness of the approach. I'm going to buy an Eventide TriceraChorus as soon as I can… 😉

  • Loved it, but I'm hearing some clipping on some of the really 2-4k heavy notes which grated on my ears a bit. Great video otherwise!

  • NOTHING beats the Keeley Dyno my Roto for Tri Chorus sounds, the downside is that it is a mono pedal.

  • I'm late to this video cause I'm building an 80's board now.First,Thank you for this video!!!! 2nd, as for the mixer, can the EHX tri parallel mixer,(pedal form), work in place of the gig rig wet……….? Thanks!!!!!!

  • Absolutely fantastic board! There are actually lots of affordable rack units, or at least ones that don’t cost an arm an a leg. You get an old SDE-3000 or an SPX-90 for like $150. I’ve got mine straight from Japan!

  • RJ this is excellent. Could I use the Fryette Power Station as the Line Out if I threw a Pre-Amp type pedal in front of it (Kingsley Constable) for instance?

  • In my opinion real pedals always sound better than software driven. Probably why so many of the old players are going back to their pedal board setups. A lot of them are even going back to recording in analog in the studio as well.

  • Hello Ronquillo from Spain. As a fan of your spectacular sound, I wanted you to advise me because I'm lost. I'm 54 years old and I'm switching from analog to digital. I wanted to ask you: what do you recommend for monitoring with digital: specific frfr for guitar (laney, tonemaster…) or with PA monitors (qsc cp8, headrush, etc)?? And how is it better, 1 in mono or 2 in stereo? For live. There is so much market offer and I always have an amp that I'm going crazy! he he. thank you so much.
**I like 80,s wet sounds, and have a valve amp, but i think It isn't the correct, no?

  • I’m guessing they did everything post amp with a load box because they didn’t have effects loops on the amps. Any reason to not use a switcher and mixer in the effects loop then send the amp out to a load box if we have it?

  • Interesting/educational video. Effects are tasty, yet it sounds overly processed and thin to my ear. The signature midrange tone, thickness, warmth and sizzle coming out of the Marshall's of the 80'd defined the tone of the 80's. This clearly comes close with the cleans (Rocktronesque) but a Marshall tone coming out of a pedal is blasphemy. I'd love to see you run those pedals through a 68' Plexi or a JCM 800. T

  • Steve Lukather helped me realize I need to assign my pedal to the mid of the EQ to push the mid up durring solo parts.
As far as DSP I just use a Digitech RP350 – I run that to a 12 channel mixer with DSP to control final gated delay.
Most beginner guitarists don't even know that the old marshal amps had far more range than the green back speaker can produce.
I'm completely ok with being a Tom Scholz clone in my mind. I don't DSP without Tom Scholz. RP350 as substitute for Rockman unit. etc

  • Did you try the waza chorus after the tricera? Im guessing the D in the dimension d stands for detune… ?

    Reply
  • RJ how is the wetter box patched in, specifically what effect is going into the wetter box and what are you running after the wetter box?

    Reply
  • Boss PS-6 Harmonist pedal does stereo detune. You can even (split the signal before and) turn balance knob 100% wet to create wet/dry/wet!

  • maaaaan, by the end and you flipped on the Distortion with Tricerachorus, that was the extravaganza , the cherry on the cake as we say ! so lush

  • I'm really just clicking through videos to see just what is going on with rackmount gear aside from the fact that for truly every role, not just guitarists, it's nearly extinct!

Even live sound devices like feedback destroyers, crossovers etc. have all but vanished. Everything is being built directly into amplifiers and hardware like powered mixers and P.A.'s. I suppose as long as people use VST's even for 90% of it, if you add those effects and perform live, you'll need something to provide them.

I also notice that ultimately guitar floor processors have taken the load up for vocals, bass and other roles so they can provide for all and I suppose there will always be at least a few rackmount processors on the market. I just know I have zero intention of getting rid of the modest collection of rack gear I have.
There are still some things they do uniquely in how they do them.
