Sterling Pete Wentz Signature StingRay Review
Pete Wentz Bass: https://www.zzounds.com/a–3985810/item–SBMWENTZ?siid=341744
My review for the Sterling by Music Man Pete Wentz Signature StingRay. Great to see an affordable artist model release in 2023/2024. The simplistic design of this bass is what makes it so unique in the Sterling lineup. This was my first time using an external mic for my iPhone so apologies for some of the audio issues. Huge shoutout to Zzounds for partnering with me for this video. Enjoy the review!

I would have to put a black pickguard on that.
My guitar store had this and I reasearched the bass online. First -> great video, great playing, and no "influencer" bs. About the bass: it was the best playable bass I have ever played. And it pushed way more bass than my Lakland, which I played in direct comparison. Also that color is the bomb! Cons: can sound bassy but empty, neck colour is ugly (subjective) and Fallout Boy suck (also subjective haha). It's a wonderful instrument.
I have always liked the look and feel of the stingray but the preamps in them were just too much for me. I dont like stacking eq on top of the eq of the amp or modeler. This passive option is excellent.
Ray34 and pete wentz what do you recommend?
Love that it has passive electronics.
I think to your point the humbucker makes it better for low tunings because it has higher output and larger magnet than single coil.
Just a guess, but could be why.
I have about 15 basses and only one is active. I don’t get why people care about active basses since you always plug it into some sort of eq either a pedalboard or amplifier or both!
It costs $900 in Europe. It doesn't deserve that price…
I've seen people online complain about the price being too high, and yea it's not cheap but it's still way better than most other signature models and you get something very nice and unique
Do you think this is a good starter Bass?
Don’t let passive electronics bother you too much. You have more than enough eq on your amp to colour your tone, not to mention adding an eq pedal on your board.
Mine sounds great playing at home but sounds awful in a live band mix. I normally keep my amp's EQ set flat. Maybe I need to boost the bass and treble like is done with the active stingray. Otherwise, the build quality is good and it's comfortable to play at about 9 lbs in weight.

I'm curious what this Stingray sounds like compared to the short scale Stingray bass? Have you tried one of those? If so, how does the tone compare?
There are more options with the electronics of the passive short scale, and it has Neodymium pickups opposed to this bass with has Alnico 5's.
No, im with you on the passive stingray pickups thing. My main bass is a Washburn XB400, and I loved the bass but hated the pickups. Problem, the washburn pickups are weird soapbars that I couldnt find ANY pickups that would fit. So, I routed it out and put a pair of stingray pickups, with a 4 way rotary switch that lets me turn off just the inner coils of the pickups, so I can kind of emulate a jazz bass, and otherwise wired as a jazz bass, so 2 volume, 1 tone. Its, Honestly the best sounding bass I've ever played.
do you think upgrading the pick up to the AG4m would be worth it since this bass doesnt have a pre amp?
Great Review
Nice review, mate, no bollocks just useful info.
????
nice bass & demo! ????????
I need to see if I can afford to get one of these in the next year. Been looking for another bass (ironically to be a counter to the Squier Wentz I own) and the tones from your vid honestly sold me. Stingrays were one I liked for years but never could get behind active pickups so this jumped up on my list
The tones on this bass are incredible. I do agree with you. The neck profile on this one has kept me from getting it because I prefer thinner necks.
Sidenote, If you prefer a jazz neck profile, the sterling ray4, ray 24, and the short scale stingray all have a 1.5” jazz bass neck profile. I can definitely recommend any of them!
Nice review My Bassist Joji????
No more government subsidies for active basses
ur demo are lvl up to ur cover standards 🙂
"if it can be used by him it can be used by anyone" XD
Had mine for about 3 months now and tuned it twice! its not at my house so not playing every day, but I turn up a week later its still perfect. Great value bass.
I’m a Pbass guy but I really want this pass bc it’s kind of the best of both worlds since it does the Pbass thing but also has that jazz bass character in it.
Looking forward to the Fall Out Boy covers!
I just got the TD Starcaster but this is making me want to shell out another few hundred bucks for a bass????. Awesome review and playing as always.
