When an unlikely collab resulted in one of the GOAT of Solos ????
Imagine one of the biggest pop music artists today having the wildest guitarist around play on their hit song? I guess the modern equivalent would be Taylor Swift inviting Tim Henson, Mateus Asato or Matteo Mancusso to sit in and shred for 16 bars ???? (I’d actually like to hear that!)
Beat It is a prime example of Eddie’s quirky, idiosyncratic, yet melodic approach to the guitar.
It’s almost Jazz-like in how he ‘floats’ over the beat, not locking in conventionally to the 16th note grid. There’s plenty of space too. He squeezes all sorts of sounds out, including pinch harmonics, whammy dives, and a healthy dose of his signature tapping.
It’s also slightly out of tune, which I’ve gone to lengths to duplicate for this clip, using my StroboPlus HDC. It weirdly helps it sound far more soulful and organic, less shreddy & exercise-like. His playing was never designed to sound polished and sterile, despite the flashy runs & techniques.
It’s important to remember that Eddie was more a rock and blues player than an overly ‘note perfect’ shredder. Music was art to him, not a technical exercise. His rise to fame led to an infinite army of shredders to follow in his footsteps, yet none of them came close to the purity & soulfulness of his playing.
I think it’s because of his sense of musicality. He just wanted to compose great songs. His playing was a means to that end. He kept his eye on the prize, and didn’t focus on trying to compete or out-shred anyone. Maybe that’s why he disliked people telling him how great-a-player he was – that wasn’t his goal.
Fun Fact: 3 members of Toto played on this track, Jeff Porcaro on Drums, Steve Lukather on Rhythm Guitar/Bass and Steve Porcaro on Keys. The story of how they had to piece ‘Beat It’ together can be heard in the Rick Beato interview with Lukather – definitely worth checking out.

Amazing Solo by Eddie! What people don’t know is Steve Lukather from Toto came up with and played all the rhythm n bass in that song. He is an amazing underrated Guitarist in his own right.
