Sire Marcus Miller P8 electric bass unboxing, demo + head-to-head vs. Fender & Schecter

*PLEASE READ BEFORE WATCHING!* While I was initially very excited about this bass, it had a fatal flaw in the jack design and I ended up returning it. I have since had _another_ bad experience with Sire (video forthcoming), and so I DO NOT recommend Sire instruments. (Why am I even keeping the video published, then? So I don’t forget my mistakes.)

This is going to be my last new bass demo video for a while, so I’ve made it a blow-out. In addition to unboxing and demoing a few of the myriad sounds of the Sire Marcus Miller P8, I compare it head-to-head vs. the Fender Player Jazz Bass, Schecter Stiletto Studio, and even the Fender American Ultra Jazz Bass.

tl;dr The Sire is my favorite.

CHAPTERS
0:04 Part One: What Am I Doing?
3:11 Part Two: First Impressions
5:53 Part Three: Tone Demos
7:54 Part Four: Head-to-Head
9:29 Part Five: Conclusions

Correction: 7:35 Yes, in fact it was a couple of weeks before I realized that the passive tone control functions even when you’re in active mode, and although I had the active treble EQ turned up during this test, the passive tone was turned all the way down.

  • IT DIED ON STAGE AND I SOLD IT. I feel like that really needs to be stated clearly here. I loved this bass at first, but the output jack has a fundamental design flaw. I couldn't trust it after that. I could have replaced the jack, but I decided to sell it instead.

  • Agreed that Sire makes pretty good instruments for the money. However, to my taste they look too much like Fenders (of which I got 'tired'). So, I bought Ibanez basses (SRF705 fretless and SR305), which have a kind of Fender shape but much more sexy and more ergonomic. Very pleased with them. Before those two I had an Ibanez Musician fretless and Yamaha BB405. I was amazed about how the quality and performance of basses have improved over the decades. So, clearly under $1000 you can have a very good bass. Anything more than that is for the looks and the status

  • I totally agree with you on the headstock, and I’ve seen too many sunburst basses. But I do own a Sire bass and it’s one of the best basses I’ve ever owned and played.

  • I purchased that Schecter bass and returned it because the truss rod was way to tight. To adjust the neck I was worried about breaking the truss rod. Not a good start for a new bass.

  • Had some MM basses, active aswell as passive, can't get used to the sound of any of them, a passive Squier or Fender feels like coming home to me, so I'll stick with that, so, how much a bass lookes on YouTube played by top players, go out and play for yourself and stick with what you like and speakes to you, no matter if it's Sire or any other brand.

  • Yep quite good basses, had a V7 and P7. Sold both for a Squier 40th anniversary precision and a Yamaha TRBX304 which are even better value.
Battery cover was a stupid design on the P7 and the V7 was like a boat anchor.

  • I’m just a hobbyist revisiting bass as I get older. I am really enjoying my Sire V5. It’s passive and easy to mess with.

  • Rumor says they shaped that headstock that shape to keep from being sued by Fender! Kiesel guitars also say the same thing!

  • Is there a reason you chose the Pj over the jazz… Im having a mild meltdow about this choice… the pbass just looks so cool.. also maybe a different tone in the middle position of both basses… thanks

  • I own a fender Jazz ultra V and I couldn’t disagree more with your assessment of the instrument… Great build quality excellent action and a phenomenal tone. It’s by far the best bass I have ever owned or played. I own 5 other basses which includes an EBMm 4 H and they all collect dust now. I will say I think the build quality on my EBMM is slightly better than the Fender. However I have heard and read excellent reviews on this particular bass. The consensus is for the price it is the best bass for the $$$. .

  • The sunburst is not like the fender style strong ones, it’s closer to honey burst than sun burst it’s really beautiful

  • Headstock definitely looks better with roasted maple. That was always my main gripe with the earlier, lighter models.

  • charvel makes a better bass, no pick guard demarzio pick ups, roasted neck with 1.5 nut. rounded fret board. IMHO .

  • I've played Sire basses (V7) almost exclusively live for the past 7 years. They are incredible bang for the buck instruments, but there are 2 negatives worth mentioning. 1. They're all pretty heavy. I've yet to encounter one under 9-1/2 lbs. 2. The input jack will eventually go and need to be replaced. 3. I find the newer battery compartment covers annoying. The V1s had simple flip up battery covers for much quicker battery replacement.
