  • 1. depends on the type of music. 2. after you add all other instruments and put bass in his natural place, not much difference

  • Obviously real bass will always be better, but with enough dedication, and "sound designing" you can make a virtual bass sound nearly identical to the real thing

  • For better feedback, you can cut out the initial explanations of the video. The thumbnail already shows the video's topic, and it's clear from the visuals that you're trying the real guitar first. Give it a shot, it might work out ????

  • Who expects a virtual bass to sound better!? I mean come on lol the object is to get close…..until someone can track it. But you can do so much with VB!

  • Real bass is always going to be the best, but at least VSTs are very close to the real thing. Also MODO Bass is a very nice free plugin.

  • well try out Ample basses and you'll see that it's better than the vst you have right now

  • Iss never about what sounds better, iss do you know how to play. Cuz if you don’t, you’re going virtual

  • Ok. They’re both perfectly acceptable, really good, even. But if I had the choice of Sapko playing on something I was recording I’d be pretty pissed off if he used a MIDI keyboard for the baseline!

I use Modo all the time but usually for a scratch track, although I have left it in on occasion. I prefer to play the bass for ideas (I think in frets, despite being an ex-keyboard player in the band I was most successful in) then use MODO for a scratch or demo track then get out my trusty P-bass for the final.
Basically, it’s not a competition. Horses for courses, workflow is king and queen.

  • Real is obviously better because you can hear the scrape of the fingers. The virtual is more than passable, but what makes it work is because it was played on a MIDI keyboard and not programmed. The natural human attack and release of a note makes it feel so much more real than if it was just keyed into the DAW with everything perfectly on beat.

  • Хорошо звучит и живой bass и virtual bass но живой лучше

  • Add a sustain pedal to the VST and it might sound a bit more realistic. Pretty sure you can also add the pick tones to the VST. Otherwise, real bass is a clear winner

  • Listen to the Persona 5 soundtrack, all of the bass on there is a VST called Trillian. It’s insane when programmed properly but playing it in the same way you’d play the line on a keyboard leads to the familiar uncanny valley zone

  • I think the midi bass will sit adequately well in a complete mix. It sound good with my eyes closed when I compardd it with the real bass guitar tone.

  • Real bass had a very different attack on all those notes. Solo playing like that, it'd be easy to tell hear the difference.

  • Also yes… If you're trying to do a side-by-side comparison, then actually do a side-by-side comparison. Don't leave a big gap between the two, that's filled with commentary.

  • It's a matter of context, and of nuance. It just depends on what you're actually trying to accomplish. If the goal is just to put down some bass that drives the song, and it's not pushed up in the mix, the synthetic bass is arguably better, in the sense that it is cleaner and more precise. But as others have already pointed out, the real bass has more character. So if this were a passage where the bass is being featured, you would probably prefer the real bass. So, which is better depends on what feel is intended for the song. And of course the taste of the artist / producer / listener…
