I’ve wanted to review the Kirk Hammett Signature Flying V for a while – Imagine my surprise when they reissue it again in 2023! My first question was – why? and why so much? I was pleased to see this was a reissue of the guitar in an earlier state with passive pickups and arguably a better aging job. At least the runs are a little bit different! The secret to his V is the Stars Guitars bridge – so very iconic!

  • It'd be e so funny if a true Kirk head buyed this whole array of super expensive memorablia thing and just hanged the jacket patch to the Wall as you wuold ????. Anyway, rhis little guitar , non fitting case, tapestry and other sort of goodies array just cannot cost what it costs!!! For that money I want the actual Greenie, Signed and brougt to my home by the Actual Kirk reaching my house vía Amzon electric truck throwing a little treat to my dog before ringing my bell. .. wearing that ridículos patch on his jacket..

  • The neck angle on these is actually not more than one degree. I’m a luthier and I’m currently doing research on these because I’m making one for myself. To play metal with, of course. These late 70s early 80s ones are my favorite stylistically. I don’t know why, maybe because those are the ones these metal legends played in the 80s.

But yeah, these have that elevated fretboard on them. It’s the same thing as with the beautiful natural finish 1980 one you have a video on. The neck angle situation is a bit wonky with the flying v over the years, and I guess it has to do with the fact that they started and stopped, started and stopped with them. And then whoever was in charge at the time of the relaunch, decided what to do with them.

There is this weird rumour out there that flying vs all have a huge neck angle. But they just don’t, if my humble research is of any use. These ones have the elevated fretboard, and you can tell by just looking at it that the angle isn’t more than 1 on this. If it was 4, the strings would be well over 30mm from the body on the bridge, and the pickups would sit several mm apart in height. And, a 4 degree angle is very much something one notices.

Probably the technically easiest way to build flying vs is to make them the same way they make les pauls. That is, to plane the neck angle (on flying vs about 4 degrees) into the top of the body and have the fretboard sit directly on that. If you make it that way, the bridge will be on the height of something like 20-22mm. However, the pickups would then have to have drastically different height rims, as they do have. Well, these late seventies early eighties ones don’t have rims on them, and the pickups are sitting very high and wonky without them, and also they sit close to the same height. And that’s because of the elevated neck joint with the almost non-existent or kind of a small neck angle. It can also be seen on the neck joint area by eye. If there was zero neck angle (I don’t think it’s zero, this is just theoretical thinking), you would get away with elevating the fretboard to sit about 16-17mm from the top, and the string height in the bridge area would again be alright. With just one degree of neck angle the strings would rise several millimetres on the brigde.

I’m rambling here. But hey everybody, if someone has knowledge on this matter, I would be very interested to aquire it. And also, if my reasoning on this is bullsheit, please also give me some educated answers that would guide us the right way. I’m all about learning.

    Thank you for your videos!

  • Do a video on the 2015 Japan limited 70s re-issue Vs. Probably the only reasonably priced 70s spec V out there now.

  • I think that the picture of Kirk Hammett that was black and it had a skull with crossbones? Was meant to be a backpack for a jean jacket with no sleeves. I'm old enough to know. I'm 50 years old and that's the way I used to dress when I was a kid

  • I don't understand the "aged" look. If I'm paying good money for a NEW guitar there better not be any marks on it! As a guitar player the scratches and chips are EARNED. This is like buying a new car with dents in it or jeans with holes in them. Make your own memories and earn your scars.

  • greatest guitar ive ever played… i handled this thing in the gibson garage in a once in a lifetime opportunity a few days ago (shoutout to matt from gibson garage!)

  • why tf would you pay this much for a destroyed guitar , even for a hardcore fan just get an undamaged one and it will eventually age from your own use

  • Wow, they went all in on this thing with actual, interesting swag and a serious, SERIOUS relic job. I despise relic’d guitars…earn your dings, dammit. But a.) this is a replica and b.) it’s so next-level, I can’t help but appreciate it, without a trace of irony. This is completely beautiful and while yes, I wish they would price these things so that real street fans could afford them, I also wish that people would love eachother and live in harmony. It’s not gonna happen and a fiddle of this magnitude is going to be lawyer money. Such is life. Gibson has been on a bit of a downward slope for the past 15 years but this is unimpeachable work.

  • Did anyone else notice the strings are not perfectly centered? It’s as if the bridge was placed with the high E closer to the edge of the neck compared to the low E
    side
