The Mick Goodrick Lesson That Transformed My Jazz Guitar Playing
This one lesson from Mick Goodrick completely changed how I play over jazz standards.
In this video, I’ll break down the exact assignment Mick gave me when I studied with him at Berklee College of Music, using Chinese and Japanese pentatonic scales, rhythmic cells, permutations, and superimposition techniques. We’ll apply everything to “Falling Grace” by Steve Swallow, one of Mick’s favorite tunes.
You’ll learn:
✔️ How to use two unique pentatonic scales
✔️ Where to apply them over jazz harmony
✔️ A special pentatonic for diminished chords
✔️ How rhythmic “seeds” can unlock creative phrasing
✔️ How to superimpose scales over complex changes
Whether you’re into jazz improvisation, pentatonic theory, or just looking to grow your rhythmic and melodic vocabulary, this lesson will take your playing to the next level.

Jazz don’t work like that. Only when you start playing things that cannot be explained the music comes alive!
Love the way Mick Goodrick teached you
This is great thanks!
Just a humble suggestion. Maybe substitute rests for one (0r 2) of the attacks in each permutation. That leads to interesting syncopation over several measures. Just an idea.
This was awesome! Subscribed
