The Week in Gear 79 – The One with the Free Fender (app)

Shout-out to Henry’s Music, this week’s sponsor! https://elkqr.link/henrys
It’s time for another episode of The Week in Gear, where we dive into the latest guitar releases, tech drops, and tone temptations trying to bankrupt us all.

This week? PRS just dropped five (!) triple-pickup models, Fender launched a completely free DAW called Fender Studio, Gretsch wants to class up your semi-hollow game with the new Broadkaster series, and Kramer’s Volante guitars are here for your shred dreams in synthwave packaging. Oh—and I nearly gave away a guitar mid-video.

We’re also checking out Earthwood Bell Bronze strings (shoutout to John Mayer and Ernie Ball), and the wild world of Buttone Picks by Henry’s Music. Yeah, you heard that right.

If you’re into guitar gear reviews, new electric guitars, affordable recording tools, or just gear that makes you question your bank balance, you’re in the right place.

  • Weird strategy from Fender with this free DAW. What if any will the consequences be for Studio One that Fender got with their recent purchase of Presonus. To me it would have made a lot more sense to continue with the stripped down versions of Studio one. The limitations of this new DAW could easily be applied to Studio One. The support for Android etc makes me a bit skeptical as the I/O on mobile-platforms more often than not introduce latency far above anything you want in a DAW.

  • I think this was the best WIG yet! Very amusing. Also did that Kramer have allen key storage on the back of the neck?

  • With the PRS S2 series becoming even more expensive, the SE series has even more need for Pattern Regular necks

  • The Kramer Volante HGST has a two-point vibrato bridge (and a 43mm nut) rather than a hardtail.

  • Oh good, thank god. Nothing else to spend my money on I’ve already bought a guitar & 8 pedals today.

  • Man… I'm about to break… I haven't pulled the trigger for a very long time…

I might be about to order a Duesenberg Starplayer Deluxe…

    We're getting really close… ????

  • A Gretsch with painted on – decals – for A-holes – I mean F-holes they can't be bothered to router out. Billy Duffy must feel dragged round and down.

  • Kramer, please include a Candy Apple Red Baretta Special in your original line up, Ive been asking for years ! You have every shade of red under the sun but not candy apple, I want my candy apple !!!

  • Fender Studio is also available for Linux too!

Edit. AFAIK it’s a fork of Studio One with tweaks and changes. I think this is a good thing as the pressure is not solely on Fender to maintain the codebase

  • Andy, you are my guitar sommelier…. Without any doubt…. The way you describe guitars without seeing and/or playing them…. You could be a marketing guru as well!!❤????????

  • 8:15 those Gretsch guitars are noice ! Love the black and gold with Bigsby but their other colours work too.
Doesn’t bother me where they’re made as long as QC is good. Blackberry coloured single cut looks awesome.
Good to see the flags back but none from the southern hemisphere sadly ????
    Cheers from NZ ????????????

  • Wow! That was quite an enticing assortment of great gear. I agree with you about the last blue PRS. It’s the 1️⃣. Unfortunately I have a lengthy and pricey list of ‘To acquire’ guitars but fortunately I have several good guitars ???? that will cover some of the guitars at the beginning of the list. I’m parting with a collectible Strat and a mint Pro II plus a Les Paul and a couple others for a seriously desired older guitar made in a small quantity and a new Ultra Strat with everything new guitars should have-locking tuners, humbucker in the bridge, coil splitter, compound radius neck (I think) and absolutely fabulous shimmering amethyst color, drool. BTW-what is up with the Flying V on your wall? That’s very high on my list like #3. Keep on gasding. Love ???? what you do.

  • Is $13.99 standard price for guitar strings in America? I use Earthwood strings on my Acoutisonic and I think I paid about $6 a set. I do buy in bulk when a deal comes up because I do a Lot of Acoustic shows a year.
