It's filthy…………..lol!
Turning the gain down gives nice dynamic tube-like breakup as well. Love my MK1 50W Katana!
Yes it sounds different to my ears:
-Sounds more wide open
-Sounds a bit looser which makes it feel more aggressive
I love my Gen 3 BOSS Katana Artist, but as for sounding different, thats up for debait. I love my ToneX with the Artist connected to my Marshall MX212A
I tried the same with my Artist gen 3 combo and sounds better, but I am scared to keep the volume at max and 0.5W. Isn't it dangerous for the amp to use that way? I can't go higher than 0.5w when master volume is at max.
Ever since I heard of this trick I only use it like this. I use it for clean tones as well as crunch tones. Brings out the sound much better.
Going bald sucks. Glad I am not you.
Sounds great man. You were really jamming good there. That's an amazing amp slightly better than line6 I think.
Gonna have to try this cheers dude
I have tried everything and this amp still sounds like shit.
Please, ..please, ..PLEASE!!! Take a brush and clean that katana's control panel ????????.
I hear what your saying but from the electronics point of view what in a solid state circuit is there to saturate ? It has no tubes and unless i am mistaken no capacitors either. But there are other people on Youtube that admitted to running the master cranked but never said they found JCM 800 tonal qualities. I run my masters cranked because i running the stereo expander mode.
I am assuming “tube logic” means acts like tubes so it makes sense . Turn it on turn it up turn it loose
Can you add Sneaky Amps to the Gen3
I’ve just come across this video chappers…
I must say I think it was you that told me years ago to use full master and adjust my channel volume on my Blackstar ID 15 for a better tone! Probably 10 years ago now… there IS a difference
I think it says in the manual that the amp works best with the master volume gunned and the normal volume dialed back (not sure about the wattage setting but it seems to work better in the higher settings).
jesus, take a brush to that filthy thing.
Best tone I get his almost the same (master volume on maximum) but I turn the gain on zero and then add a Black Star Metal distortion pedal and crank its gain on full and super low volume on the pedal and it’s a Marshall JCM 800 plus a 900 with pedal
Dust your poor amp Chappers.
Oh YES!! It’s definitely nastier I’ll be fooling around with those settings thank you killer sounding riffs!????????????
Wouldn’t that normal jump from 100w vs. 50w? Um… twice the power?!?! What does this mean for the actual 50w version? I thought I found something here, you’re doubling your power with the click of switch, but… what’s the mystery? How does this apply to my 50w vs. 25w? Your panel settings are about the same as mine on every amp… except for the volume & master volume.
nasty dogs and funky kings
I own a jcm 800, dsl100 mesa boogie dual rectifier i repair and make amplifier tube and transistor a solid state amp will never sound like a tube amp
This is extremely interesting. I myself have this amp, but I have the Boss Katana Mk2 100watt head and I run through the EVH 5150 Iconic 4×12 cab
I'm gonna try this, I keep my Amp Type on Acoustic and play through the Metal Zone MT-2w
I NEVER use any of the other Amp Types. I don't like the Brown because it feels the low end is just completely gone, but it sounds wicked here on your video.
Mind you I mostly play my 8 string Ibanez tuned down a full step.
Rob I tried it and yes it worked great. Just make sure you turn down both volume after powering the unit off
you're out of tune bud… hard to enjoy the demos
I'll be honest, I have been using this trick on my own Katana MkII 100w head. I felt like the normal tone itself was okay but was lacking in something. Since I'm just playing this in my apartment bedroom, I didn't wanna get too loud. So, I tried doing this, maximum master volume and lowering the channel volume, but with the 0.5w output setting to keep myself from disturbing the neighbors. And now this is my new favorite tone to use when I play my Katana at a quiet bedroom level of volume.
Boss actually recommends this way, but if you're using Tone Studio and creating patches, it's useless. When I just wanna use the front panel, this is how I run it, but mostly, I use patches. There is a difference though.
Hello there ! I own a 50 MK2, i'm a beginner, and did exactly the same tests as you do here BEFORE watching your video ! And indeed, i can hear a huge difference.
It is really hard to tell through poor phone speakers, but having just bought a Gen3 100/212 it does seem to me as though using the power setting and manipulating the volume/master volume ratios does make a difference in sound.Others have atempted that tube reactive sound but I think boss has achieved it.I say goodbye tubes unless you just love lugging heavy antiques around and paying for replacement tubes when the go out.
That is the beauty of the Katana. The power select coupled with the master vilume give the amp a true tube feel, but at a bed room volume level.I love mine and have not even plunged into custom settings yet.I'm still playing with the factory presets and already love it.
Sounds the same to me
I think if you teek the treble down by 1 , stay on 100 watt setting and output into a 4 12 cabinet —-you would love that sound through that cabinet —speakers and cabinets set the tone —to chuggggggggggggg
I preferred the 100 watt sound.
Hard for anyone to say because we aren't given back-to-back comparisons. It would have been easier if you'd played through some stuff at one setting and played the exact same stuff at the other setting and edited the video so we could get a few seconds of each, back to back. And if you had done that, you probably could have answered your own question. 🙂
This video… damn…. what a public service. Thanks Rob!
