Gallien-Krueger Legacy Series Heads: Complete Overview and Demo

Bob and Forest Gallien from Gallien-Krueger go through a complete overview of the Legacy Series Heads. Covering every aspect of the amps, from tone controls to construction features. The goal of this video was to demonstrate not only the best way to approach setting up your Legacy head out of the box, but to also cover what each function and feature on the amp does. This is the most comprehensive video about the Legacy Heads and a great starting place for anyone who owns a Legacy Head or is thinking about purchasing one. This video can also be applied to the Legacy Series Combos, which use the exact same power amp and preamp as the Legacy 800. • Bob, PLEEEASE make a new amp-in-a-pedal for us amp less players who love our GKs! Plex was good but kinda expensive and no longer available.

  • Is it safe to say the 4+8 ohm setting also works for 3 x 8ohm cabs, daisy chained?

  • Great and informative video, thanks. Question, if I'm running two NEO 212 II (8 Ohms each) and I'm using the Legacy 800 head, where do I place the impedance switch at, for full optimal performance.

  • A gem of a video, background and instruction from Mr. Gallien himself. Absolutely unique. I had dreamed of getting a proper GK setup since 1994, finally was able to get it recently: the Legacy 1200 and a NeoIV 2X12. Everyone should be that lucky. Incredible sound. Portable. A joy to use. Versatile and powerful. So happy to be alive when this video is available to better understand a marvelous amp from legendary company.

  • Sounds like someone running there fingernails down a chalkboard. Exactly what I’ve been looking for

  • Probably the best amp demo I've ever seen. Great work. Making me want to go back to GK after many years away.

  • i dont understand the impedance? i have a Hartke HD112 cab with a 4 or 8 ohm switch and a Legacy 500 with a 3 way impedance switch what do i set both the cab and head for optimal performance?

  • Great video, thanks. After years of using various other brands I have bought a Legacy 115 combo which is a great piece of equipment. Very impressive indeed. This is a very informative and helpful video, thank you.

  • I own an 800rb and i was curious as to whether the "boost" control is the overdrive in question because i have never pushed it enough to hear anything but clean from it without the addition of pedals, also you guys were fantastic at answering my questions about the 800rb when i called. Instant on hand info about a product from 30+ years ago, amazing!

  • Great stuff, nice to hear all that manufacturing stuff. The eq really sounds nice. And a usable overdrive too.

  • Very nice demo Bob and Forest. I have been playing bass since 1969. Picked up my first GK in the 80's, I don't remember the model. Later I bought an RB-400iii with a Backline 115 and Backline 410 cabs. I played that setup for probably 13 or 14 years. I'm 68 now and can't haul that much gear anymore. About 12 years ago I bought a used 115 Backline combo for band practice, it never failed me. Several years ago I bought a MB 115-II from Sweetwater which is plenty for gigs and I use the direct out to the PA and only 38 lbs it's easy to haul around. I would really like to get the Fusion 115 or Legacy 212 but being on a fixed retirement income now will be hard to come up with that kind of scratch. I have nothing but positive things to say about the four GK amps I've had over the years. Thank you so much for a superior product!

  • Can you guys please do a comparison between this and the old 80s or 90s RB series heads.

  • I have a question about the ohm load. I believe my amp (legacy 800 like the one in the video) has a different order for the switch on the back. Mine (from bottom to the top) is (4+4) – 4 or 8 – (8+4).

Is this an older setup or am I running my amp wrong?

  • This head is amazing! After using it for two weeks and playing on stage with a reggae band and three different rock bands, this amp blew away all my expectations! The punch and GK tone are all there in a small, light and mighty package. Thank you Bob, Forrest, and all the crew at GK for developing a phenomenal product!

  • I appreciate how well you demonstrate how your products work. I just recently purchased a GK Fusion 210. Can you make a video on that? I feel like there is alot I can learn on it. Thanks!

  • I think my math should be correct if I've understood it all but could someone help & confirm? ????

So would the following head + cab combo work well:
GK legacy 800 (800w output at 2.7 ohms) with GK CX410 4 ohm cab (800watts) + GK CX 115 8 ohm cab (300watts). I think this would be awesome. So (8×4)/(8+4) = 2.666 ohms would be the total ohms in parallel, and with 4 ohm + 8 ohm cabs it would mean that 2/3 of the heads power goes to the 410, so 2/3×800=533 watts for that and 1/3×800=266 watts for the CX115.

And which was the position the back nob should be turned to? (8 + 4) right?

Thank you! I love your bass cabs and amps!

  • I didn't follow all that well the cabinet impedance explanation. I'm currently running 4×10 4ohm cabinet, what position should the switch be in? He says " middle position is 4 + 8" and mine says "4 or 8" and that's where it got confusing.

  • GK, are you saying that switchcraft input jacks are made out of TIN? or what type of jacks are you referring to that uses TIN

  • So amazing to see the actual owner and head of the company do a video like this. Bob Gallien is a true electrical genius and after all these years, his dedication to the sound is still evident. Ever since I discovered GK amps a few years ago, I'm GK for life. I have the 4×10 Legacy combo and I could not be happier. Perfect tone. More power than I'll ever need. Built like a tank. Bonus that it looks tough as hell. #GKallday

  • I absolutely LOVE my 700RB, but (now that I'm older) it's a bit too big and heavy. This looks like the perfect solution.

  • I can see Mr. Gallien is very proud of this product and he should be. Looks like a lot of thought is put into his products and they built a beauty here. Great explanation of how it works, straight from the horse's mouth! My 400RB is still happily cranking among. GK, best sounding bass heads out there!

  • My Legacy says 4 or 8 on the middle switch selection, not the top. Is this an error on the video?

  • Music stores seem show the fender rumble 800 head as the knock off version of this at half the price… they have all the same controls… but i imagine the EQ circuit is totally different?
