  • I don’t know why he thinks that Marshall valve-state is trash gear. I think just because it’s not super expensive stuff people diss it not realizing that decent gear doesn’t have to be super insane price wise. I have a Marshall valve state AVT 150 and there’s nothing wrong with it. Plus most gear in the guitar world is based on personal preference so, I think there’s nothing wrong with that gear at all.

  • He used the 8100 not the vs100. They sound completely different. 8100 can sound like the vs100 but not the other way around. The 8100 has more gain, better effects, better tone, and you can jump the effects loop and get even more gain!

  • D standard or drop c is modern death metal, deathcore and any genre. The truth behind that is almost any vocals can hit the key notes. Not every but those growls in the studio come out on key

  • Death mainly uses Phrygian scales. Tbh they were the first death metal band in my book but more in the deathrash style . Like u had that slayer heavy vibe but nah this guy faves us that middle eastern Egypt sound

  • Despite its bad rep, the valvestate was used by a lot of big bands like prong, meshuggah, cannibal corpse and in flames. Its far from the best for modern mid-forward tones, but it excels at those 1990's scooped nasty death metal tones.

  • vs100 yea about 3-400, 8100’s lately i’ve been seeing for way more, 600+. so many heavy bands used these in the 90’s, they sound way different from the vs100’s

  • I wonder how Chuck would respond to companies like Neural DSP if he were still around and they make a pitch to him about making his signature plugin. Clearly, you can make decent music with good technique and basic, minimalist setup.

  • I get that Chuck's tone wasn't for everyone but one thing about that tone, whether people like it or not, is that it has it's own character and inspired a lot of the iconic riffs we all know and love. If you hear THAT tone; you know you're listening to Death.

To me, there is something I feel is missing with a lot of modern metal tones. It sounds great but a lot of it lacks that personality without that grit that seperates bands from one another.

  • Dint he use a delay or some type of Phaser on voice of the soul? his lead tone is absolutely insane

  • Death is just another proof that you don't really need fancy gear to make great music, you just have to find what works for the sounds you want to make.

  • That gallencruger combo is a gem…. If you use speakers that arent the ones that come stock on them. Kinda like the 6505+ combo

  • Valvestates are awesome, people think there's black Magic in having valves. And the ds-1 is a useful distortion. People just don't know how to use knobs

  • The Valvestate is actually a pretty good amplifier. You just have to know how to set it correctly which can take a while and I learned that every Valvestate sounds a bit different ^^ So you might have a bit of luck to get a good sounding one..

All in all your tone was pretty close
