5 Minute tips for Hawaiian Steel Guitar #2
Some folks have been asking me to do a few videos on Hawaiian steel guitar, so I thought I’d maybe try and blast a quick 5 minute one out each week for a while and see if it’s of any interest. It’s hard to get a point across in 5 minutes, but I’ll give it a whirl for a while each Tuesday.
Here’s the second one. It’s a little right hand technique that gets a lot of airtime in the playing of Sol Hoopii, Sol K. Bright and King Bennie Nawahi.
I’m using open G tuning for this (DGDGBD Low to High) but this would also apply to the high-bass tuning, or Dobro tuning (GBDGBD). Enjoy!
If you dig this, and want to see some more, let me know in the comments what you’d like to learn about, and hit the subscribe button. Feel free to ask any questions and I’ll do my best to answer them. I did put a playlist together of a few Hawaiian tunes I’ve recorded over the last bunch of years from various albums. Thanks to your lesson series I made an account on YouTube and I just ordered a 1930 Style 1 Triplate! I can't wait to get it! Can you please suggest what strings I should purchase for it? Thanks!
What mic(s) do you like to use when recording a hollow neck Tricone for an album?
What's the name of the bar again? Can you write it down here?
Another fantastic lesson! Thanks! I just picked up a 1930 Style 2 hollow neck Tricone. I initially used something called “Flitz” to clean it. I was wondering what you do to keep your guitar in good condition?
Really nice lesson – i love that you’ve broken things down slowly and focused on techniques that can transfer to other tunes. Any chance you’ll get into B11 tuning? Also – did you work through the Jerry Byrd Course when you were first getting into steel? Thanks! Nice job!
Thanks for another great lesson. I am hoping to get the parts I need to get my “new to me” hollow neck Tricone together within the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, it wasn’t packed well and arrive with crushed cones. I am really looking forward to getting it working. Any ETA for when The Volcano Brothers CD might actually come out?
You have officially made Tuesday my favorite day of the week! Thank you!
Jeez, Steve. How do you spell "esoteric"? Haha. Love the learning.
Very cool that you are answering questions before these lessons. Thanks for doing this.
Thanks for the lessons. I hear that lick all over place and it great to learn how it is done. I was curious as to what brand, composition, and gauge strings you use? Looking forward to your CD coming out. I have really enjoyed your Volcano Brothers video. All the best!
Brilliant! I just came across these Hawaiian lessons. You are a great teacher! Do you have a favorite Hawaiian player? How about a song or tune that you love to hear and or play?
These lessons are top-notch! The question/answer section is also great! Thanks!
I can’t wait for The Volcano Bros. CD to become available!
Another great lesson! Thanks for the lesson, and thanks for answering my questions!
Very helpful. One request: when at your computer, would it be possible to re-direct the ceiling spotlights behind you? They’re rather distracting. Thanks.
