Vox VT20X (Hybrid Modelling Amp)
Vox VT20X (Hybrid Modelling Amp)
Today it’s a hybrid guitar tube amp, made for practice. It’s a Vox. I’ve been asked on many occasions to check out this amplifier, so today I do. I’ve tried all sorts of Vox amps, liked some, some not so, so this should be interesting.
Hope you enjoy!

This offering from Vox (Korg) is not quite the shilling, but maybe a pence.
I respect your dedication to a thorough review. I happen to disagree and love the way the valvetronic amps sound but it's still a great review and I appreciate the work you put in to giving us a detailed demonstration with no bias or paid opinions.
It's made with particle board, which will upset the purists. The speaker is 5 ohms, which is odd. I think it sounds quite good, and takes effects pedals well. Elmo doesn't ever really like cheap gear, in my opinion. The three or four clean amp voices it does makes this my go-to amp for many years now. It may not last forever, but it's pretty good for the price in the meantime. Build quality ok.
I used to gig the older versions and it was excelent
Well, when you're off-key or bad bend, of course, blame it on the amp lol… remember your pickups have a lot to do with sustain and the distortion… should have used different guitars along with it
I’m sorry, but it sounds like you have the gain way too high on all amp models. It’s super fuzzy. Maybe it’s because of the Strat.
Sounds dark and muddy…
NEVER trust the opinion of ANYONE who plays with a scalloped fretboard!!! ????LMFAO!!! Unless your a metal shredder stuck in the 80s, this amp will be fine for most practice and basic recording applications. I agree the speaker is not the best, and I may upgrade mine. He failed to mention the fact that it uses a crappy wall-wart AC adapter power supply, and it can make a lot of noise depending on your electricity. Here's an easy fix for that —-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUfYnCSvJKo
i have always said Do Not buy an amplifier ..practice / play without ..ok its not very loud but so what ..!! i have 9 electric guitars ..5 Gibson les pauls .2 strats and 2 tele's [fender] and have never owned an amp for 16 years of playing ..why you may ask ….because 16 years ago i gave up on them ..all of them ..there was never any amplifier good enough and 16 years later they are all still the same ..some might have more effects [to cover up the crap] …do yourselves a favour ..save your money and do without because as long as you keep buying amps , the more crap they will manufacture ..
I had one & eventually sold it as I simply couldn't get my head round all the many, many! variables. In some ways it's a great amp, as it's oomphy enough to gig, as well as being a decent modeller. Nice. Its robust, too. Elmo’s enjoying it with the optional foot switch bank, which gives it some tasty gig-a-bility.
If you see one at a good price, snap it up – you may be pleasantly surprised ????
How about Vox Valvetronix VT40X ?
You get the sweetest classic sound from the Tweed 4×10. You have to “hear” to be able to dial it in. It’s the best of the models.
You straight shred
Is it good for unit pedal and pedal efector?
All of your small amp reviews, the amps sound real heavy on the bass like the speaker is in a box. Other channel reviews sound like way too bright. Interesting.
i have VT40…best amp for me
6:43 the Peppa Pig theme????????????
I owe you a apology..I said your review was unfair…however I just returned mine because it is crap….the speaker is horrible….again I bow in apology ????
Come on !! It costs £164 ..what do u expect …give it some slack..perfect for beginners…idiot brainless..on this review…beginners ,it’s great to turn a knob and have some different sounds..it’s fun a start etc etc ????
However your Katana gen 3..is excellent review and I agree..I have a mk2 and the sounds are nasty ,tone studio does a bit to help but …ughhh..
I dont understand all of you hating on it. I own this model and its pure bliss ! You have so many options to choose from and it sounds glorious. Besides ,the pre amp features are more than welcomed. Id recommend buying it. You wont regret it.
These amp are for home use pro gigging musician’s use Vox AC 30s
More like "Watch how good I am", than an in depth useful review!
There are too many that do this.
If you are reviewing a product, the product should be the focus of the review – not your guitar chops!
Thanks for the video ! It s an absolute NO !!! I ll go for the Marshall 30gfx …again????????????????…..So sorry that I sold it ????
Dziękuję za filmik A mam pytanie polecasz Vox czy Katana 50
I’m am quite surprised about your opinion on the VOX AV30. First off, i think it is pretty ugly (why, oh why VOX, do you think you need to produce amps with such ugly modern designs if you do have such an iconic and timeless design ? ;)). But luckily i don’t listen with my eyes, and to me the AV30 can produce some some really nice and inspiring clean, slightly as well as heavily overdriven sounds. May be i am biased, but i do really believe that this is in part because it does not use any digital modeling in the preamp section but good old analog solid state techniques. I also really like the design, with two completely identical channels. as wel as the use of a two separate 12AX7 tubes to create natural preamp as well als poweramp tube distortion and transformer feedback effects.
The presence of a gain and volume per channel and a single ‘power level’ dial may be a bit confusing and could mislead people in using the power level dial as a master volume. But a bit of experimenting is very rewarding and a correct understanding can provide really nice results (simplest explanation: bedroom: ‘powerlevel’ low (for low wattage tube amp characteristics). Practice or small gig : powerlevel high (for higher wattage tube amp characteristics).
Finally: i love the fact that the AV30 not only has a ‘insert loop’, but that it is located in the signal chain before the amp powerlevel circuitry. First of al, i don’t understand why the presence of an effect loop is so often ignored by YT reviewers. It adds so much functionality and is such an important feature if you want to use an amp together with your other existing gear (and don’t we all want that ? ;))
One very practical application is the possibility to use an amp as a powered speaker cabinet for any other preamp using the effect return input. However, with the AV30 you can also add some tube power amp characteristics, which can be very nice in combination with digital modelers, which can often still sound a bit sterile 🙂
But the unique possibility Unfortunately, some great results (you do get a feel of how these three dials work together, have seen people use the powerlessly to use but with the gain, the power I have not seen this in any other amp besides the AV series. You do have to think a little bit how far as i know, it is the only amp that with sounds (and all analog !). amps, especially
I have no idea how to use this amp, I cant get it to work properly always too loud or the effect dont work or something i just cant get it right
Hi, nice review, I wonder what it sound like with an electro acoustic guitar, have you tested it ?
hello,
I have the vt40x.
The amp produces background noise without even plugging in the jack. This noise increases when I increase the power. is it normal ?
Double rectum hahahah
The 40 watt version of this is much better. Plus it has 20 watts more power.
Thank you very much for such a comprehensive review!
Usually hear something really shreddy after let's hear some overdrive.I can't get that one yet. It's very swedish. my usual heavy sound is more V.H/ metal. I really want to get that swedish sound. I will figure it out.its o.d. into a slightly o.d. amp.
Yesss the double rectum fire!!! @8:10
Is it better than a Fender Mustang LT25?
(In your, or someone else'sopinion)
Valvetronix 40
Very inspiring playing man
With all due respect, and I mean this earnestly, I think you need to visit your audiologist because I like you and wish you the best and I'm not kidding dude, I think you rock.
How do you not have more subs mate, your video quality and presentation are insane
Using just the amp as a standalone I agree it does sound harsh, however it is much more tweakable using the software and the headphones as a line out, why they didn't put a better speaker and a proper line out I'm not sure, was going to sell it before I used the software but it will stay now as I can get some decent sounds for recording.
Would you say this is a better option than the Fender Mustang LT25? Im looking for something that can handle a treble booster…
You need to adjust the controls from the app on the computer in order to access all the controls. Otherwise, it's too confusing.
Vox Vt20x o Marshall g15FX ? En Distorsión
A change of speaker does make a world of difference on this Vox as well as its smaller Vox DA5 offering. Sadly, ???? Vox (Korg) chose to cut corners by installing a lesser quality stock speaker. I own a Vox DA20, Vox Cambridg-50, Vox AC30c2. I used to own this Vox, Vox DA5 and Vox Mini 5 rytham.
The 40 watt version is way less harsh
Excellent review and demo as always. I love Vox amps and its jingle jangle. Even its modeling amp products. I own three of its Valvetronix modelling amps.
