  • Great review and overview. I appreciated the same riff being played back to back on the various switch settings.

  • Thanks for this! I just got one of these. It’s a weirdo. Like you said. It’s not a bass. It’s not a guitar. I’m a bass player but haven’t played in years and my guitar skills are pretty “campfire” basic. I’ve been in a musical rut for years. My husband is a guitar player and I was hoping this might inspire me a bit to play again with him. I think I’m just going to invent a way of playing this that’s just my own. It’s the perfect instrument to experiment on. Wish me luck.

  • Coil tap has more to do with allowing high-wind, hot puckups to be "tapped" to where the amp sees a more vintage signal from the pickups. A coil tap bypasses several hundred winds so that, in theory, the signal from the strings is audibly being picked up by a portion of the winds, thereby allowing a high-wind pickup to sound more like a lower-wound pickup. Also, coil tap can work on both humbucker and single coil pickups. A coil split allows a player to turn off one bobbin's winds of a humbuckimg pickup and allow signal to only pass through one bobbin of the humbucker. This gives a humbucking pickup a more single coil-like sound. Usually, a coil split sounds a bit anemic compared to a purpose built single coil pickup so some pickup builders are splitting the humbuckers to where only a percentage of the second coil of the humbucker is bypassed to allow a "split" humbucker to not have too dramatic of a volume drop when switching from full humbucking to split mode..

  • Why is the neck so narrow? My archtop 6 string is 1.75" I don't play speed metal, and I need to be able to play complex chord shapes without cramping my hand up.

  • The idea of a riff played through those Guitar Amp/Bass Amp/DI tracks in unison scares many a bassist and rhythm guitarist as they sleep.

    Imagine that sound.

    Great stuff, Jonny!

  • Schecter discontinued this model and now they have a new one, the "Hellcat VI" with different pickups and 3 switches for coil split of each pickup, unfortunately nobody has made a video review for that model.

  • I sold mine and regret it now. Its a fun instrument to play around on but to be honest I never found much use for it in my music. It lends itself to being swamped in chorus and reverb which means everything ends up sounding like The Cure or Joy Division. Its an essential purchase for anyone starting an 80s Goth band lol

  • I feel like it was meant to be distorted all along, has an unnatural wah noise to it that's satisfyingly weird.

  • Have a Squier Bass VI with aftermarket trem so it stays in tune and plays fine. Love it for its awkward musical journeys. As you mentioned this thing is made for distortion. Also due to its origins I tend to use FX I would usually dismiss such as tremolo or delay you name it.

  • really excellent video. I do still wonder how different a schecter is from say a squire, for cost reasons.

  • I do need to ask a noob question… I have owned one of these since they first came out and was wondering about the coil tapping function on it. So, when I pull up is this when I create the coil tap sound (Which I am guessing is the humbucker with a lower output – a bit like a single coil? and when I push it back it becomes a full on humbucker? Is that right? (I have never used the coil tap function but am thinking of trying this on the next album, if it gives me a kind of single coil sound… Would be grateful for a response.

  • Hey JD. The new Gretsch baritone was initially designed as a bass vi. One has a Bigsby trem. Intriguing to say the least.

  • Great video. I have this exact model of Schecter Bass VI. They are hard to find. Bass VI overall is an underrated choice. I find it works best when I approach it as its own unique fretted instrument. Fun to play. You did it justice. Cheers!
