Mixed Messages 5 | Ambient Guitar
Animals sprinting is one of my favourite things to watch and border collies are one of the best. Absolutely incredible energy to tear up an incline like they do. I’m not sure what it is about max effort, sheer natural power that really does it for me but it makes me almost tear up. Like the training montage in Rocky and the shot where he’s running with the kids but then really turns on the heat, and you see him just flee the scene, legs pushing the earth beneath him away. I dunno, very inspirational on a very basic human level.
Anyway, music-wise this one’s kind of at odds with the sheer speed of the found footage. If you listen to my radio show (link below) you’ll know I am a huge pedal steel fan. I’ve pretty much emptied the tank on pedal steel bends for guitar youtube tutorials. Mostly bending, I don’t really play slide guitar (not well enough to post it anyway) and one helpful technique is targeting a chord/note whatever and bending into that from a scale note below (or above). I started by just using scales (nat major/minor as well as pentatonics) and finding little spots in each that just seem to fit the key.
Now for the what I’ve been listening to bit. This Mary Margaret O’Hara song called Body’s in Trouble that I heard of Margeux’s NTS show. American Analog Set. Slow Attack Ensemble. Talk West. Samuel Organ. Ry Cooder’s Blue City soundtrack. Dan Reeder. This amazing (Scottish! Represent.) guitarist called Christopher Haddow who made this album “An unexpected giant leap” which is very much a finding-your-feet-as-a-new-parent type album. Exhausted caregivers will know what I mean 😉
