Hey everyone! Today we’re taking a look at a VERY special bass – the Peavey Cirrus 5. New owner of a Redwood/Alder Cirrus 4. Loving the neck, the 35” scale, & the electronics in this bass. Nothing burps quite like a Cirrus!
Best low B and action without going custom during that time frame. The mid sweep added a lot more versatility.
Poor man's Ken Smith. Awesome bass!!!!
What is the Cirrus strung with? Also…still hanging on to it?
Hey Lobster , where you been? google search brought me to this video, I hope you're well and healthy, 5 months since a new video take care.
Just got my self one,. Awesome???????? Nice video????
Have you tried the Indonesian bxp? And how it compared to the USA model?
There was a Peavey Cirrus 5-string at Sam Ash near me in the rental section. I paid $300 for it. It was a great bass, but I turned around and sold it to Guitar Center right down the street for ~$1600 a week later and I felt like I hit the lottery.
Years later, I’m playing a Peavey TL-Five. From what I’ve read, it was the signature model that inspired the Cirrus line and it’s a pretty awesome bass. I love how “gulpy” these 80s/90s Peavey basses are. Thanks for this video.
Hello, I love your reviews! I would like to see a review and/or comparison of this bass with the Harley Benton BZ-5000, it appears to be a "copy".????
I would like to see more Peavey stuff Lobsty!
At Least you could Play… The "lobster" Ish, however, Nah!! Happy Travels….
Finally someone who understand me when i say warwick bridge is terrible . And same for thèse ABM bridge. Lobster, does the hipshot is retrofit , no new drilling required? Can you go lower action than with the original bridge? Regards from France.
Love the Peavey Cirrus! I'd love to see a VS video between this one and the Schecter Stiletto Studio too. I hope you can consider making one in the future!
I have a 4 string and 5 string Cirrus BXP. I know they are not the USA's but this is exactly what they sound like! They are truly a pleasure to play and have an amazing neck profile!????
I'm a younger cat I'll admit, I'm out here finding instruments that have literally been on earth longer than I have. Adds to the mystique I guess lol
Hey there ! Can anyone tell me if standard Ernie Ball strings will fit or do I have to purchase extra long scale for this ? I don't own one but my GASing will depend on the answer !
When I was about 14 I was gifted a cirrus custom shop. After playing a t40 for about 2 years. I’m now 30, and it’s been on all gigs, played in all churches I’ve played at. I’ve been wanting to replace it with a new bass, but I haven’t been able to find something comparable or better for under 1500 new. This has been such an amazing instrument to play, and it’ll go with me once again to an audition with a new church. Can’t wait to redial a new tone that fits me. You’re able to get soooooooooooooo many different tones with the later models which is what I have. Great all around bass. Took it to guitar center and they offered me 225 for it. No blemishes, nothing missing. I walked away laughing to say the least.
The first bass I ever bought with my own money is my Walnut Cirrus 4 for $700 in the summer of 2010. I will never sell it. Through good times and bad, roundwounds and flats, it has been there for me.
Which one it's more versatile
This peavey bass or ibanez sr1205 premium
Awesome bass
Fantastic bass!!
This bass will definitely give some of those high end basses a run for the money!!
I would give this 5 claw’s. Lol ????????
Thanks for your video Lobster:) Well done
I just scored a Bubinga/Walnut Cirrus USA 5 string. I had the one you have in a 6 string. I had to sell for financial reasons ????, but made a vow if I ever saw another one, I'd grab it. I will never sell it!
I have a 20 year old Indonesian one for like 8 years and it still is my main studio and gig bass. Great piece of instrument to play fingerstyle, slap, pretty anything you want. That B string is absolute killer. It has lots of lows even if I cut it out. 10/10
My eyes smell.
I've had three of these including a fretless wenge. I still have the maple top 5 and it's beat to hell but still plays amazing. I've recently dug it out and begun searching for some fixes and upgrades to address some issues that have cropped up from all the use. Anyone else have clips of these with the millennium preamp swapped in?
lol!
Johnny Long calls these "the poor man's Ken Smith". I think people missed the boat on these.
I just want to say this out loud about the Peavey active control board on Cirrus basses:
IT IS ENTIRELY TOO BIG AND TAKES UP FAR MORE ROOM THAN NECESSARY!
You can fit two guitar pedals side-by-side inside that cavity.
If it wasn't for the board, you could easily fit everything in half of the space.
Correction on that Dyna bass, its a 9 volt preamp not an 8 volt. No idea where that came from!
I have this exact same cirrus bass. Mine is a late 1999 model. Same color Red Wood. USA Made Peavey equipment just can’t be beat. I also have a 4 String USA made Dyna Unity Bass which is also a great bass! The Dyna has the 8 volt preamp with the passive and active select switch and 3 band eq. Build quality on these US peavey instruments is rock solid and very comfortable to play with awesome tones. Once Peavey quit manufacturing in Meridian Mississippi, they started manufacturing overseas. Thats why there the Indonesian version of the Cirrus bass. But quality and sound is nothing like the US made basses.
I own a 99 cirrus 5 string. Bought it new. I’ve played that bass in many studio seasons ! Don’t let the word “Peavey” fool ya. It’s a nice sounding and nice playing bass. My “go to “ is my 73 original jazz sunburst. My dad traded a set of swingerland drums for it in the late 70s. I wouldn’t take anything for that beauty
This was the top end option at my local music shop back when I first started playing, back in 2006. So many memories of lowering one of these beauties off of the wall, need to pick one up before no one who has one wants to part with it.
What strings are you using? Mine is strung with TI Infeld Jazz flats with a GHS Precision Flat B string. TI B is a monsterous .136 ???? not for me.
I own a 2007 redwood top this exact bass you are showing with the Hartley Peavey signature headstock and yes mine is 9.2lbs I can play it all night long a most comfortable feel and design. Lucky me ????
How do you compare this to a Ken Smith bass tone and built.
Great review! It`s a joy to see, how you love basses and play on it. and also its interesting
A friend (a bass teacher) had a Peavey Cirrus 5 custom, but he sold it because he said it lacked expressiveness: everything sounded the same however you played. His had sweepable mids and an ebony fretboard.
Would you trade one of these for a Lakland Skyline 5 string? (not with me, some offered a Peavey to me some time ago) I am looking some more ergonomic and lightweight…and maybe have the oportunity to trade for un Cirrus…
There's a post on the Talk Bass forum the last few days from Fred at Peavey that the Cirrus will be re launched later this year…so good news there
Plenty of vintage tone IMO. Vintage Cirrus.
Mike Porcaro bass !!!
Happy owner of a 1998 USA Cirrus 5. Had it for about 10 years already. Such a great souding bass and easy to play.
If they're good enough for Rudy Sarzo, they're than good enough for the rest of us blokes.
I just got this bass in a pristine condition from a retired great musician in Texas. I had to drive 5 hours to pick it up and I did. The price and time are nothing compared to what I got. I am so happy and lucky!
Love this bass. How much would you sell it? just in case of.
My brother owns one and it rivals many at a lesser $$$ and yes it is a rare gem????❤️
There's this guy Rod MCG that has some peaveys they sound badass, like an angry piano.
It certainly is a beautiful instrument. The neck looks to be five piece with the two outside purpleheart strips being part of the body. Sound great with many options, I like it. Thanks Lobster.
I love that riff you're playing! Such a funky little groove.
